Will not receive a fax from fax and save

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP DeskJet Plus 4120 All-in-One Printer can send faxes but not receive them, here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Verify Fax Line Setup

  • Ensure a dedicated fax line: The printer's fax function should ideally have its own phone line or be properly configured for shared use.
  • Check phone line connection: Verify that the phone cable is securely connected to the Line port on the printer and the wall jack.
  • Phone line compatibility: Ensure the line supports analog signals, as fax machines often cannot use digital or VoIP lines without a converter.

2. Adjust Fax Settings

Check Fax Reception Mode:

  • On the printer control panel, go to Fax Settings.
  • Ensure the printer is set to Auto Answer or Fax Receive Mode.
  • If using the same line for calls and faxes, set the printer to answer after a higher number of rings (e.g., 4 or 5) to allow calls to go through.

Set Fax Speed and Error Correction:

  • Reduce the fax speed to a lower setting (e.g., Medium or Slow).
  • Enable Error Correction Mode (ECM) to ensure data is correctly received.

Turn On Fax Forwarding (Optional):

  • If receiving directly on paper is problematic, enable the option to forward faxes to an email address or a file.

3. Check for Conflicts

  • Disable voicemail: Voicemail can intercept incoming faxes if it answers before the printer.
  • Shared phone devices: Ensure there are no devices, such as splitters or answering machines, causing interference.

4. Test Incoming Fax

  • Use HP’s Fax Test Service:
    1. Send a test fax to 1-888-HPFaxme (1-888-473-2963).
    2. Wait for a return fax. If it fails, the issue may lie in reception or phone line compatibility.
  • Fax from another machine: Use another fax machine or service to send a test fax to your printer.

5. Update Firmware

Ensure your printer's firmware is up-to-date:

  • Use the HP Smart App or go to HP's Support Website to download and install the latest updates.
