Hi @Marj15,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're unable to scan documents using the document feeder (ADF) with your HP printer in the HP Smart app, here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

Check the Document Feeder

  • Ensure the paper is loaded correctly: Place the documents face up (or as indicated by the feeder instructions).
  • Check for obstructions: Inspect the feeder for any stuck paper or debris.
  • Clean the ADF rollers: Dust or dirt on the rollers can prevent the feeder from working.

Test the ADF Functionality

  • Try scanning directly from the printer's control panel (if it has one):
    • Select Scan and choose the Document Feeder as the source.
    • If this works, the issue may be with the HP Smart app.

Update Printer Firmware and Software

  • Printer firmware:
    • Use the HP Smart app or go to the HP Support website to check for firmware updates for your printer.
  • HP Smart app:
    • Ensure you have the latest version of the HP Smart app installed on your device.

Reconfigure the Scanner in HP Smart

  • Open the HP Smart app:
    1. Remove the printer and re-add it:
      • Go to Settings > Add/Remove Printer > Remove Printer.
      • Re-add the printer by searching for it on the network.
    2. When selecting the scan source, explicitly choose Document Feeder.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)

If you're using a Windows PC:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor to automatically detect and fix scanning issues.

Check Scanner Settings

  • In the HP Smart app or scanning software:
    • Choose Source: Select Document Feeder or ADF instead of the flatbed scanner.
    • Ensure proper settings for the scan (e.g., resolution, size).

Advanced Troubleshooting

  • Network Connection: If the printer is connected via WiFi, ensure the network is stable and both the printer and device are on the same network.
  • Drivers: Uninstall and reinstall the full-feature driver/software for your printer from the HP website.

Factory Reset (Last Resort)

  • Perform a factory reset of the printer to restore default settings:
    • Refer to the printer's manual for specific instructions.
    • Reconfigure the printer and reconnect to the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
