I have a problem scanning. I get a preview OK but when I scan I get the message -
Problem scanning - something went wrong - please try again.
When I tried the Scan Doctor - I get a preview OK but when I then scan I get - Scan was cancelled by the scanner.

Hi @Jeffcodman,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're having persistent issues with scanning on your HP printer. Here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem:
1. Check Connections
- Ensure the printer is properly connected to your computer or network (USB or Wi-Fi).
- If using USB, try a different cable or port on your computer.
2. Restart Devices
- Power cycle both your printer and computer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it for about 30 seconds.
- Restart your computer.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
3. Update Drivers
- Make sure that your printer drivers are up to date:
- Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
- Download and install the latest drivers for your operating system.
4. Use HP Smart App
- If you haven’t already, try using the HP Smart app:
- Download and install the app from the Mac App Store or Microsoft Store.
- Add your printer and try scanning through the app, as it often handles scanning better than other software.
5. Check Scanner Settings
- Ensure that the correct scanning source is selected:
- In the scanning software, check if the correct source (like "Flatbed" or "ADF") is chosen.
- Try scanning at a lower resolution to see if that resolves the issue.
6. Check for Software Conflicts
- Disable any other scanning software temporarily, as it might conflict with the HP software.
7. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
- You mentioned using the Scan Doctor, but ensure you run the entire tool:
- Download and install HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP website.
- Run the tool and follow the prompts to diagnose and fix any issues.
8. Check for Firmware Updates
- Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware:
- Go to the printer's control panel and navigate to Settings.
- Check for Firmware Update options.
9. Factory Reset the Printer
- If all else fails, consider a factory reset:
- Navigate to Settings on the printer's control panel.
- Look for an option to Restore Factory Defaults or similar.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
