I have a HP Officejet Pro 8600 with flatbed scanning ability. I want to scan multiple photos in one step from the Flatbed automatically cropped.   Is their software to walk me through accomplishing this?  I would appreciate a guide.

Welcome to the HP Community --

The same Full Feature Software you have been using for years is the software of choice to detect multiple photos on the flatbed and then save each as a separate file:  HP Scan

The "automatic" crop is limited to detecting the boundary of each photo -- the printer has no way to know what kind of individual cropping you want to do on an image.  You can always opened the saved file(s) afterwards and crop your photo file the way you want it.   Save the cropped version under a different name to protect the original file.

The one caveat involves the age of the printer software.  This is old software -- the version is old.  No, there is not a newer version of the full driver printer software available for the printer.   It's possible that the age of the software will impact the available options -- No, I cannot test it for you.

What should / might work:

  • Place photos on flatbed, face down, separated by about an inch or so

NOTE:  If photos are placed on the flatbed too close together, any "too close" images will be combined.

  • Open "HP Scan"
  • Select Shortcut "Save as JPEG"
  • Set Page Size = Detect Photos
  • Open More Settings and check the sub-menus - Adjust as wanted / necessary
  • Click OK to save changes in a particular sub-menu
  • Click OK again to leave More Settings and return to the main menu
  • When ready, Click to Scan

Example - HP Scan - Save as JPEG - Detect Photos

if you really want to retain your images/photos for the future, ie family photos do not save them as Jpeg or Jpg.  Jpeg or Jpg is a LOSSY format and over time will degrade and that doesn't matter how high a resolution the dpi is, to retain your images at best quality and to retain them for the future, save them in a format known as Tiff or Tif, these are what's known as LOSSLESS, formats.  Scanning multiple images is no problem, fit them all on your flatbed, in whatever order they will best fit and at how best they will fit, in other words, you may need to fit them vertical and/or horizontal, it doesn't matter because you will be able to crop each photo separately and rotate them later in Microsoft Windows own image editor. If you want to add information, - which I recommend you do,- about the photo, this can be done, once saved to your folder and using explorer's Details Pane. I hope that helps, but you must save as Tiff/Tif or eventually lose them.
