Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended
Officejet 5470
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I try to make a copy of a document placed on the glass plate, without any document inserted in the ADF, I hear the ADF motor moving briefly, then an error message appears on screen : "The document feeder was not able to pick up the original. Load the original in the document feeder and try again"

I tried to reset the printer by unplugging it and waiting a few seconds. I tried cleaning the ADF rollers. Unfortunately without any result.

It looks like the ADF falsely detects a document.

Is there a way to force copy from glass bed and ignore the ADF?

Did not find "5470" printer.

Printer found:

HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer series

There is a difference between Copy and Scan setup.

Basic Instructions

How to Scan (Windows)

How to Copy

Selecting Webscan settings

If the printer is on the network, use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to adjust Webscan settings.

Webscan, as used in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) can be set to use either the glass or the ADF (for those printers providing ADF).

EWS_Webscan_1EWS_Webscan_1

Selecting Scan Source in printer software

If you are using the printer software from the computer to scan, set the Source.

If the printer software lacks the Source selection, consider using HP Scan Extended software.

HP Scan Extended – Exceptional free HP scan program:  HP Scan Extended features include (and are not limited to): Single, Multiple scans, Image and PDF scans, Source selection, Page Size choices include Auto-Detect (extracts image / document boundary). Download, save, and install to use.

NOTES

  • HPSE is an older subset of the printer software; features are very similar to scan software included in 2015 or newer Full Feature Software packages.
  • If you have the newer version of the scan software inside your Full Feature Software, use that: Printer Assistant shortcut icon on Desktop (named for printer) > Scan a document or image (wording varies).
  • Although the HPSE program works as a separate program, HPSE is dependent on the infrastructure provided by the printer software. The Full Feature Software for your printer should be installed before installing HPSE.

Example - HP Scan Extended - General setup

NOTE:  Save to JPEG and Save to PDF offer similar setup / features

HPSE_Scan-to-PDF_1HPSE_Scan-to-PDF_1

For later - nice software:

NAPS2 -- Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).  Includes OCR.  Download, save, and install to use.

Setting Copy Defaults - EWS

If the printer is on the network, use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to set the Copy Defaults.

Example:

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Copy Settings > Default Settings

Adjust as desired, Click Apply to save changes

EWS_Settings_Copy_1EWS_Settings_Copy_1

NOTE:

Some (newer) Officejet Pro printers separate part of the default Copy settings into two topics.

For example, the Officejet Pro 8740 provides some "Defaul" settings for Copy in the Copy setup; the paper is set in Preferences.

Example - Officejet Pro 8740 - Paper Preferences

EWS_Settings_Preferences_Paper_8740_1EWS_Settings_Preferences_Paper_8740_1

Alternate Software for Scan

HP Scan and Capture from Windows Store (Requires Windows 8 or higher)

Thanks for the quick answer,

Unfortunatelly, It appears that on the Officejet 5740 the EWS doesn't seem to have "Copy settings".

Below is a screen capture of the Settings tab on the EWS on my printer:

Well, that's a bummer (very old saying meaning, "Rats, that is unfortunate.")

Obviously if the copy defaults cannot be set, the EWS advice was not useful.

More Rats.

The Copy how-to document provides how Copy is supposed to work.  It does appear that there should be a way to select the source (Tray selection).  I do not see anything that tells you whether you can specify the Source (glass / ADF).  Rats abound.

If you are willing to scan the document / image into the computer and then print it, the following might help.

If the printer software was not previously installed, install the Full Feature Software

After the printer software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Next - install...

Example HPSE

HPSE_Scan-to-PDF_1HPSE_Scan-to-PDF_1

NOTE:  The setup for PDF and for JPEG is similar:

Place image / document on the glass

Open HPSE software (likely a "scan" shortcut on the desktop, though not named "HPSE")

Set the options on the main menu, including the source (glass / adf)

Click More >

Set options in each category

When ready click Scan

If HPSE doesn't work, something else is wrong.  Printer is being unnecessarily stubborn.

Try Uninstalling > Restart > Install a fresh copy of the Full Feature Software > Restart

Details on reinstallation procedure on request.
