I recently received subject printer as a gift, and I can do wireless work with it with a hot spot as I do not have internet at home. I noted that there is a USB port inside the hinged door. If I put a USB thumb drive in there, is it possible to scan a document to that thumb drive, and if so, to what format does it go, like into a PDF?

Yes, you can scan to USB flash drive. Printer should list it as a destination. You can scan and save PDF or image file formats
