The printer has some limitations - this is NOT one of them.

Cropping is done with the software / application you are using the scan the content.

Caveat:

PDF / document scans - AT THIS WRITING - using HP Smart are subject to a bug that increases the Page Size of the document AND the file size of the saved scan.  The solution / fix is slated for mid-June.

I am not aware that scanning images produces the same problem.

Try it and see, I guess -- OR use other scan software on your Mac.

HP Smart for Mac

HP Smart – MacOS Desktop – Mac Apple Store

      Compatibility

          Mac OS Desktop

          Requires macOS 10.13 or later.

================================================

One of the screen shots in the "Apple" store for the app shows a "crop" window setup.

NOTE:

I don't have a Mac - it does appear the setup MIGHT be somewhat similar to the Crop used in HP Smart - Windows.

An example follows -- if the setup is similar enough, you might be able to extrapolate what you need for "your" HP Smart MacOS application.

Open HP Smart

If you have not done so, sign into the application

On the main menu, Select box Scan

Set up the scan job parameters - Photo

For example,

Source = Scanner Glass

Presets = Photo

Scan Area = Entire Scan Area OR select the size of your scan

Output = Color

Resolution = 300 DPI

Compression = Medium

When ready, Click Scan

After the content is scanned,

Click Circle ... Select Edit

Example shows two actions on one panel to illustrate the screen change...

Edit the content

If "custom" drag the corners of the crop box where you want to cut the image.

If one of the "preset" boxes will work, click that crop size.

Click Cancel or Done to stop editing.

After the content is suitably cropped and "Done",

Continue with Save / Share (send via emai) or other options as available.
