Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP ENVY 5544 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello, I want my Envy 5544 to send scanned documents or pictures to Thunderbird, open a new mail and attach them. Thunderbird is set as default e-mail client and as target for mailto-links. But every time I try, I get this error message:

20240813_170525.jpg

Translation: Application HP Scan can not open your e-mail application and/or the scan not attached to a new mail. Check e-mail configuration and try again.

I do not use HP Smart. I already managed it to use a HP office jet printer send scans to Thunderbird, but the Envy doesn't. Any ideas or suggestions?

Achim

Apologies for jumping in unannounced.

In November of 2021 when the answer was published, HP Scan did support Thunderbird.

Now, in 2024, not-so-much.

At this writing, only "email" is listed -- when the "Send" button is clicked, if Outlook is available (installed), then HP Scan opens Outlook -- the setup is the standard Outlook email window.

Yes, I know -- it's disappointing for Thunderbird fans.

Yes, you must have Outlook installed.

No, I don't know why Thunderbird was dropped -- likely a licensing conflict or perhaps Microsoft objected to sharing with the upstart Bird Mail app.  ??

The following example is from HP Scan for OfficeJet Pro 9135 -- the format is different.

Although the menus look different from the original HP Scan, the "Email as PDF" > More > Destination setup provides the same options as in the standard HP Scan program / app -- Only Outlook is supported as the mail client.

Hi, Andr-1611,

thank you for your help. It didn't work for me:

As you can see, at 'Ziel' (Destination) there is no checkbox to choose an e-mail client. I installed the same software that you linked.

@achklein

Sorry for the confusion.

Thunderbird is no longer available to use as a mail client.

Not.

Apologies if my earlier message was unclear.

At this writing, only Outlook is listed as an available mail client for any version of HP Scan.

The limitation includes original HP Scan, HP Scan as part of the newer software for some printers, and HP Universal Scan Software.

Hi Achim,

then you have no choice but to store or save the files in a directory and use TB to attach the files to the e-mail.
I always have my TB open! My new email is already written and I only need to attach the scan(s) after HP Scan has finished saving.
I hope I was able to help you with my suggestion.

One more tip: Save the scanned files with date and time.
Greetings Andr-1611
