Junk Fax Blocking. At least 1/3rd of our junk faxes are without Caller ID. Is there a way for the junk fax blocker to prevent those from being downloaded? (If not, why not?)

Thank you.

BTW - your category list did not come close to addressing the appropriate category for my question.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

General rules - "How it works"

If you want to block faxes, you must first subscribe to a Caller ID service.

Next, the accommodation provided by the printer is to manually add the unwanted fax callers to a Block list.

Why does the printer not determine how to handle unwanted faxes?

The printer does not -- on its own -- have any knowledge or understanding of which phone numbers are desired and which numbers are considered trash.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Fax > Settings > Junk Fax Blocker

Excerpted from the EWS page

If you do not want to receive faxes from specific people or businesses, you can block their fax numbers. To block a fax number, click "New", enter the number, and then click "Apply". To unblock a fax number, select the number, and then click "Delete".

Note:
  1. To use this feature, you must subscribe to a caller ID service through your phone provider.

What else?

This printer supports Digital Fax.

Although the printer cannot stop legitimate phone numbers from connecting, faxes can be accepted in file or email format.

If Digital Fax can be used, the method can certainly reduce paper consumption.

Thank you Dragon-Fur. I appreciate the thoughtful response. I have been able to create a length block send junk fax list.

The primary issue here is how to block incoming junk faxes lacking caller IDs?  If the junk fax blocker can block faxes coming from a specific caller ID, surely it should be able to block faxes that lack any caller ID (What are we talking about - 2 or 3 lines of code?)!

Digitally downloading all incoming faxes first and reviewing them manually is untenable in our particular environment.

Thoughts?

True - seems simple.

Just tell the printer that you want this in addition -- or instead of -- that.

My Opinion - based on suppositions and several assumptions about how this works...

The following is typed on the fly -- admittedly never a good idea...

The printer internal "Operating System" - compared to your computer (or even your phone) is primitive.

If that description sounds too harsh, think "limited".

The printer understands enough to reference a block list.

In so much that I am aware, programming a printer to accept new code or commands it does not already know is beyond the scope of anyone lacking access to the printer's internal environment.

Interestingly (perhaps),

If you download the faxes to a file set,

and although the number of lines of code needed are many more than two or three,

Your computer is a smart enough environment to accept a program to filter the files you have stored in a folder created for that purpose.

Once the code is written, the task can be added to the Task Scheduler in Windows.

Run the sorter program as often as is reasonable for the number of faxes you receive within a given time frame.

The results could be printed or shunted to another folder for further sorting and possible printing.

At the least, the fax to folder method provides backups of every fax that is gathered and stored this way.

Emails are a bit tougher -- I can imagine even that is doable -- additional access required, along with a mail client software to use to extract and collect the necessary messages.  Could be messy unless the email address is dedicated.

Who writes the code?

Not me.  I am long retired.

Perhaps...

College students majoring in Computer Science breathe code - it is oxygen and sustenance.

High School students -- particularly those in AP class settings -- might have an interest in the subject

Work colleagues with a background or interest in the craft

Application writers -- there might be "an app for that" already out there somewhere.

What else?

Invest in an eFax subscription service -

In particular, paid electronic fax services include features and options not limited by what a printer can understand.
