I no longer have a keypad on the 5740 printer to enter a telephone number to send a fax. The only option now is SEND/RECEIVE fax, send fax, use glass, then it tries to fax with no option to enter a number.

I suspect a recent update to windows has caused this issue, but I'm at a loss. I have uninstalled, reinstalled software and ran the HP Print & Scan Doctor to no avail.

Issue resolved. I had 2 phone lines connected together. Apparently the connector went bad. After replacing them with one longer phone cord from the wall outlet to the printer/fax, things are back as they should be.
