Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have used this HP LaserJet 1536dnf MFP for many years. Its scanning software worked great. It stopped working recently when I installed a mesh system to fix poor Wi-Fi coverage. I had to uninstall the printer and reinstall the HP LaserJet “Full Feature Software and Driver,” which I had done in the past without issue. This time, though, when I reinstall the software, the printer works but the scanner does not work. I have downloaded and have run the HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.7.4 from that same website. It tells me a very long error message. The essence of that error message is that it cannot find the HP Scan application software in my computer. It does cause the scanner to scan, and the 1536’s display says “Scanning to PC” like it used to when the scanning worked.

It should be noted that I am not using Wi-Fi. The LaserJet 1536dnf’s Ethernet port is wired to the modem/router with an Ethernet cable. The two Windows 10 PCs also have Ethernet cables from them to the modem/router.

I already followed all the steps in a post from 05-26-2022 by @Woody1294. That did not fix the problem.

Coming to this HP Community, I clicked on “Scanning, Faxing & Copying.” There I read this message:

“NOTE: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates.”

I do not know if that is the problem, although it is not yet May 1, 2024.

Can anyone offer a way for me to fix this?

Hi @LO_HP_Fan,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

Excellent description and a great diagnosis. It is greatly appreciated.

This could be a potential hardware issue.

This might require one-on-one interaction to fix the issue.

We have limited support boundaries in the support community as of now. I would request you to contact our HP Support Engineers who should be able to sort this out.

HP provides repair or service options as well. Hence I encourage you to contact HP support.

For that to happen, we will give you additional instructions/information via Private Message.

Please check your inbox on the forums page for the private message.

Hello Elohi_NR,

Thank you for your help. In the time between my initial posting and your initial response, I have done lots of experimenting. It turns out I do not have a hardware problem. I have 2 separate problems.

Firstly, the HP Full Solution (drivers and software) supports printing but no longer supports scanning like it had for many years. The HP note that I mentioned in my initial post says there will be no support for scanning after May 1, 2024. It mentioned the Microsoft Store won't support it after that date, either. I got the software from the Microsoft Store and can now scan again. It is not nearly as good as the original HP Scan software, but at least it works for now. I hope it continues to work after May 1.

Secondly, I discovered that I can print and scan if I turn off the Virtual Private Network (VPN) on the client PCs. When I turn on the VPN, I cannot print or scan. I get the error message "Device not found."

If you know of a website where I can learn how to install my HP 1536 MFP so that it will work on my home network with PCs that use VPN, please let me know of that website.

Thank you again!
