HP LaserJet Pro MFP M225dw

I just got an Apple Silicon M1 Pro MacBook Pro with a fresh install of macOS Monterey 12.5, then upgraded it to macOS Ventura 13.0.1, before attempting to do the printer/scanner setup for my HP LaserJet Pro MFP M225dw. I downloaded, installed, and opened HP Easy Start, which told me to install HP Smart, which I did. I went to System Settings > Printers & Scanners, and followed the steps to "Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax..." using AirPrint. When this completed, the MFP M225dw was added, but only for printing. The scanning functionality is missing:

  • When I click on the printer in System Settings > Printers & Scanners, there is no "Open Scanner..." button opposite the "Printer Queue..." button like there should be.
  • I installed HP Easy Scan, but it says "Scanner: No Scanner Selected", and when I click "Browse Scanners...", none appear in the list.
  • In the macOS built-in Preview app > File menu > "Import from Scanner..." is greyed out.
  • In the macOS built-in Image Capture app, the printer/scanner does not appear in the list of available sources in the sidebar.

The only way I'm able to scan is to use the HP Smart app after signing in to my HP account, but I don't want to scan in this way. I don't want to have to log in to my account to scan (for privacy reasons), the HP Smart scanning functionality is very limited, and I would like to scan using HP Easy Scan or Apple's own Preview or Image Capture apps.

It appears that this computer is only recognizing the MFP M225dw as a printer, not as a scanner.

However, I have another older, Intel-based Mac (also running the same macOS Ventura 13.0.1) which successfully recognizes the same MFP M225dw for scanning, and I'm able to scan from it using HP Easy Scan, Preview, and Image Capture. I had done the printer/scanner setup years ago when it was on an older macOS version and have not had any scanning problems after updating to macOS Ventura 13.0.1. I don't understand why scanning works on this other Mac but not on my new one.

How do I get my new M1 Pro MacBook Pro running macOS Ventura 13.0.1 to recognize my HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M225dw for scanning so that I can scan from it using HP Easy Scan (and Apple's own Preview and Image Capture apps)?

I tried the following steps but they did not resolve the problem:

  • I retried the setup process using "Reset Printing System..." from the macOS Printers & Scanners settings and re-added the M225dw. It made no difference.
  • I verified on the printer/scanner that the latest available firmware is installed. When I checked for new firmware updates directly on the printer using its touchscreen interface, it said none are available. The printer says it has Firmware Datecode 20200619.
  • I deleted and reinstalled HP Smart.
  • I deleted and reinstalled HP Easy Scan.
  • I rebooted the MacBook Pro.
  • I rebooted the M225dw printer/scanner.
