Whether from ADF, direct placement on the printer glass, or printing from the computer, my documents come out with a horizontal banding along the left margin of the document.  The banding is at regular 1 ⅛" intervals and extends approximately 2 inches from the left margin into the document.  From the settings menu on the printer, I've navigated through the Printer Maintenance -> Print Quality Tools -> Cleaning Page.  I've recalibrated the printer, cleaned the ADF scanner glass strip, the white plastic ADF strip on the underside of the scanner lid, the flatbed scanner glass, the underside of the flatbed scanner lid, the pick rollers, and the separator pad.  The horizontal banding persists as described.  The printer indicates that the toner cartridge is low, but still holds enough toner to print 300 additional documents.  I've removed the cartridge and gently shaken it to redistribute what toner remains.  The printer was purchased 4 years ago and employed as a home office printer with low - medium use.  What else might I try?  Or what else might the issue be?   Thank you!

If you are getting the banding even when printing, you are chasing the wrong part of the printer by even considering the scanner. Have you tried a different toner cartridge because that would be the first thing to try. Based on your measurement and referring to the repetitive defect chart for your printer it would appear the developer roller is bad, which is part of the toner cartridge,

Thank you Repairatrooper!  I'll purchase a new toner cartridge today and hope it resolves the issue.  But can you advise which is the correct and current toner cartridge?  The HP site specifies for use in North America and Latin America, for M428 models only the following  toner cartridges:

Standard-capacity replacement black toner cartridge -> Cartridge Number 58A.    OR

High-capacity replacement black toner cartridge -> Cartridge Number 58X

But I can't seem to find either cartridge when searching the HP site.  My local Office Depot DOES carry the 58X and I'll purchase one there.  I'll let you know if this resolves the issue.  Many thanks for your support!

Hello Repairatrooper!  A final follow-up. Your suggestion to replace the toner cartridge was spot on!  I replaced my existing HP standard capacity black toner cartridge -> Cartridge Number 58A with a new HP 58A cartridge.  No more issues!  Thank you for your help!
