I am trying to setup to copy to my computer directly and it will not scan.  Initially it did then I tried to use the HP Doctor and it referred to http://hp.com/hpscan which I ran and now it will not scan either from the computer or directly on the printer.

Scan to Network Folder at the printer is a different animal from using an application or printer software on your computer.   This task is generally created using a Quick Set -- Quick Sets are most easily created at your computer using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Quick Sets > Select one of -- Add / Edit / Copy / Delete  > Quick Set Profile

Complete the steps to create / update the Profile

and

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Scan > Scan to Network Folder > Default Job Options

Reference

HP LaserJet Pro MFP - Set up Scan to Network Folder

Partial Excerpt

  • On the EWS Home page, click the Settings tab.
  • In the left pane, click Control Panel Customization, and then click Quick Sets.
  • Click the Add icon .
  • From the Type drop-down list, select Scan to Network folder, enter a name to display on the control panel for the Quick Sets, and then follow the onscreen instructions to add a Quick Set profile for a network folder. When finished, click Next.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to set up the network folder, authentication requirements, and scan and file configurations. When finished, click Apply.

Next,

Scan Software

The printer is eligible for HP Universal Scan software as a separate installation from the full driver.  While is it not generally necessary (or useful) to install both the standalone and the full driver, the system will usually tolerate doing so and simply install each in a slightly different folder location on your computer.

So, No - I cannot explain why the Universal Scan Software does not work on your (presumably) Windows 11 system.

The full driver printer software includes something not part of the standalone version of the Universal Scan Software -- The Scan Assistant.

The Scan Assistant shortcut -- added to your computer's Desktop with the installation of the full driver printer software -- can be used to manage (enable / disable) the Scan to Computer feature.

Printer Software - Full Driver

Reinstall the full driver printer software

Details / How-to / Examples

Check / Apply Windows Updates

  • Check / Install any pending Windows Updates
  • If any updates are applied in Windows Updates, Restart your computer and log in

Next,

Uninstall existing printer software

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
  • If your printer software includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.

Install full driver printer software

  • If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

Web Pack Installation - Open Web Page - Full Driver Printer Software

               Installed Software

Containers, Shortcuts on the Desktop

            What about HP Scan?

After the installation of the printer software is complete -

The full driver will be listed in Programs and Features AND in Settings > Apps > Installed Apps (Windows 11)

HP Containers / Desktop Shortcuts

Next,

  • The full driver printer software will have added one or more "container" shortcuts on the Desktop:

  • Printer Assistant - named for the printer model

OR

On newer printers and when the new full driver printer software no longer supports the Printer Assistant:

  • Scan Assistant - named for itself

AND

  • The full driver printer software, once installed, will have added a shortcut icon for HP Scan

NOTE > Model Dependent

The shortcut for HP Scan that is part of the full driver might be named for the printer model.

Next,

=====================

Printer Assistant – Scan Assistant - Manage Scan to Computer

The installation of the full driver generally adds at least one, possibly two shortcuts to the Desktop.

NotePrinter Assistant, HP Scan Assistant, and HP Scan are dependent on printer model and supported software options.

  • Printer Assistant – Where still supported as part of the full driver printer software
  • HP Scan Assistant – For those printers that no longer provide the Printer Assistant
  • HP Scan – Shortcut on Desktop named for the printer model
  • When installed, HP Universal Scan software adds a separate self-named “HP Scan” shortcut

If available, enable "Scan to Computer" using the Printer Assistant

Open Printer Assistant shortcut > Tab Scan > Manage Scan to Computer > Enable or Disable

OR

Open HP Scan Assistant shortcut > Tab Scan > Manage Scan to Computer > Enable or Disable
