I'm going to raise this again, since someone posted about this several months ago and no one from HP has responded.
There is no reason on Earth why we should have to log in to an HP account in order to scan from our printers to our PCs -- other than HP's desire to invade our privacy and collect information they have no right to collect. Please stop this now.

Welcome back to the HP Community.
No one from HP will respond here - HP maintains no official presence on our Community.
This is a peer-to-peer user forum.
We get a few requests / complaints / comments each month on the subject of "sign in to use HP Smart".
The answer is always the same even when one Expert / Agent uses different words than might another.
The HP Smart application - Windows / MacOS / Mobile varieties - requires that you sign into the application.
The requirement was added to the application (about) the last month of 2020.
The requirement will not likely change.
The important part:
HP Smart - in Windows / MacOS - is not a mandatory application.
Instead, use other options to Scan, including:
Full Feature Software (Printer Software) - includes HP Scan
- Most new printer models provide the "Easy Start Software" wrapper install method. If applicable to your printer, Easy Start will be found in the Software and Drivers website > Software. Easy Start provides installation access to the Full Feature Software.
- Download-and-Save the Full Feature Software or HP Easy Start Printer Setup for your Operating System version from your printer's Website Support for Software and Drivers
NAPS2 – “Not Another PDF Scanner” (Free – Donations gladly accepted by the NAPS2 organization)
- Download-Save-Install > NAPS2
- Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).
- Not always simple “Plug and Play”, nonetheless, this free software is powerful and configurable.
Notes
- Includes an OCR feature – may need Ghostscript add-on (See NAPS2 forum entry)
- Read the Support pages for information
- Read the Getting Started guide

Thanks. I actually don't buy that third party scanning software have drivers that play nicely with my unit. I've tried this kind of thing from time to time, and it never really works: the software doesn't play nice with the device, it's too complicated to use, etc. What I would really like is a device that will just scan natively into Adobe Acrobat or ABBYY Fine Reader. I haven't been able to get this OfficeJet 9015e to do that, which is why I'm dealing with HP Smart in the first place.
I get the idea that HP somehow designs its device driver interfaces so as to thwart third party software and force you to use its own. I'd be interested in learning from this community if that's really true. If so, it's another reason for me to get off the fence and get a new printer from a different manufacturer.
