HP Envy 6152e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I'm learning to scan documents, and think I'm doing it right.  I go through the process to save my document easily enough.  But when I go to check that I've saved it correctly, I discover that a document that was previously in that folder is no longer there.  I've even tried closing Explorer and re-opening it to go to the correct folder, but still, the only file showing is the one I just scanned.  The missing file is not in my Recycle Bin, either.  It's like it disappeared into thin air.   Can you help me?

@Lasses71, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue where previously saved files in a folder disappear after saving a new scanned document using your HP Envy 6152e All-in-One Printer on Windows 11. I understand how concerning this can be, and I’m here to help you resolve it.

This issue may be due to how the HP Smart app or Windows File Explorer is handling file saving or folder views. Sometimes, scanned files may overwrite existing ones if they have the same name, or the folder view might be filtered to show only certain file types.

Check for File Overwriting

  1. Open the folder where you save your scans.
  2. Right-click in the folder and select Sort by > Date modified to see the most recent files.
  3. Check if the missing file might have been overwritten. If the new scan has the same name (e.g., Scan001.pdf), it could have replaced the old one.

Change File Naming Settings in HP Smart

  1. Open the HP Smart app. HP Smart
  2. Click on Scan > Settings (gear icon).
  3. Under File Name, choose a unique name or enable Auto-increment (e.g., Scan001, Scan002, etc.).
  4. Save the settings and try scanning again.

Check Folder View Filters

  1. In File Explorer, go to the folder where you save scans.
  2. Click on the View tab > Show > ensure File name extensions and Hidden items are checked.
  3. Also, check the Sort by and Group by settings to ensure no filters are hiding files.

Search for the Missing File

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. In the search bar, type part of the missing file’s name or use *.pdf or *.jpg (depending on your scan format).
  3. Check if the file was saved in a different location.

Check OneDrive or Cloud Sync

If you're using OneDrive or another cloud service, the file might have been moved or synced elsewhere:

  • Open OneDrive from the system tray.
  • Check the Recent or Recycle Bin section.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
