Hi @ecblay,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When you're unable to scan from your HP OfficeJet 5255 and HP Smart won't open, it could be due to various reasons. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Restart Your Printer and Computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues. Turn off both your printer and computer, wait for a few minutes, then turn them back on.
  • Check Connections: Ensure that your printer is properly connected to your computer via USB cable or Wi-Fi network.
  • Update Drivers: Make sure your printer drivers are up to date. You can do this by visiting the HP website and downloading the latest drivers for your OfficeJet 5255 model.
  • Check HP Smart App: If HP Smart won't open, try reinstalling the application. Uninstall it from your computer, download the latest version from the HP website, and then reinstall it.
  • Scan from Control Panel: If HP Smart still won't work, try scanning directly from your printer's control panel. Most HP printers have a scanning option accessible through the control panel.
  • Check for Errors: Look for any error messages or notifications on your printer's display panel. This might give you more insight into what's causing the issue.
  • Reset Printing System (Mac): If you're using a Mac, you can reset the printing system. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, right-click on the printer, and select "Reset printing system." Then, re-add your printer and try scanning again.
  • Firewall and Antivirus: Sometimes, firewall or antivirus settings can interfere with scanning operations. Temporarily disable your firewall or antivirus software and try scanning again.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue preventing you from scanning with your HP OfficeJet 5255.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
