HP LaserJet Pro MFP M225dn
Microsoft Windows 11

The printer works fine, but about every time I try to use it as a scanner, I find the scanner device is absent. I have found no other solution than to reinstall the software (HPHP_LJ_Pro_MFP_M225-M226_Full_Solution_22051.exe), which turns a quick scan into a half-hour project.

Hello @TomPermutt ,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!

A complete product software for Win11 is not offered!
But this software: HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL6 (64-bit) for USB connected printers

To scan try this Solution:

  1. Download only this file: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi
  2. Close all programs

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo > in folder Downloads double-click on the msi.

OPTIONAL:

Add HP Scan Extended shortcut to Taskbar / Send to Desktop / Pin to Start
    • Open File Explorer > Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Scan Extended\bin
    • Right-Click on "HPScan.exe" > Select Pin to Taskbar / Send to Desktop / Pin to Start

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

It seems to work so far, and the included application is more convenient than either Windows Fax & Scan or the HP Scan app. However, since the main problem with the other driver was that it lost sight of the device over time, I'll be watching for that.

It would be helpful if the HP website pointed there instead of exclusively to the broken "complete product software." Also, it's worth noting that the other software, if installed, should be removed first for this one to work properly.

Thanks for your feedback.
I will pass on your advice to uninstall the other/previous software first.
