HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw
Microsoft Windows 11

My scanner is working fine regarding the quality of scan.

When I scan using document tray, I can hear loud grinding noise when the paper was taken in.

I think I need to do some lubrication but could not locate preventive maintenance in the manual.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

@OrangeTabby0714, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw's Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) rollers or separation pad might be dry or dirty, which can cause grinding or loud intake noises.

Here’s a step-by-step to help you reduce the noise and possibly fix the issue:

1. Turn off and unplug the printer.

Safety first. Let it sit for a minute to ensure no electrical charge remains.

2. Clean the ADF rollers and separation pad

  • Loud noise usually comes from rollers struggling to grip the paper.
  • Open the ADF cover.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol (90%+).
    Gently clean:
  • Pickup rollers (rubber rollers under the tray)
  • Separation pad (the rubber pad beneath the ADF tray)
  • Let everything dry for 5–10 minutes.

3. Inspect for debris or worn-out parts

Check for:

  • Torn paper bits
  • Dust buildup
  • Cracks in rollers or loose gears

If any rubber parts are glazed or cracked, they may need replacing.

4. Lubrication (Use with Caution)

HP generally does not recommend user-applied lubrication, especially near rollers. But if the noise seems to come from internal moving plastic parts:

  • Use dry Teflon lubricant or plastic-safe silicone spray VERY sparingly.
  • Apply to the plastic gear teeth only if you have access, not the rollers.

Avoid WD-40 or oil-based lubricants—these can damage plastics or attract dust.

🧰 Optional: Reset ADF

Sometimes a reset helps recalibrate ADF behavior:

  1. Unplug the printer while powered on.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and power it up.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
