I'm a new Mac user (macbook pro) and installed HP Easy Start to get it to work with my printer.  Printing seems to work fine though it takes forever for the Mac to communicate  a print job to the printer with USB connection. Up to 5 min before anything starts printing.

 

Scanning is a no go - HP Easy Scan doesn't recognize the device and neither does Apple image capture.

 

What am i doing wrong?

Hi,

Is the USB directly connected to the Mac? or through any USB hubs or extentions?

 

How long the USB cable is?

 

Also, try switching it to another USB port of your Mac

 

Additionally, download and install the latest printer firmware below:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/FW_CPE_Consumer/M28-M31_1D/HP_Laserjet_Pro_M28_M31_Multifu...

 

When the process completes, power off the printer for at least 60 seconds, restart your Mac, then power it back on and check for any difference with Image Capture or HP Easy Scan.

 

Additionally, if you experience further issues, what is your exact printer model? (e.g. M29a, M29nw, etc.)

Thank you Shlomil and I'm sorry it's taken so long to follow up on your suggestions. Here's the message that I'm getting when I try to install the printer firmware from the link you shared - if you aren't able to see the image I pasted it says "HP Firmware Updater" can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.

 

The all-in-one printer I'm using is the HP MFP M28-M31. Printing seems to be working fine now, no delays, but the scanner still isn't recognized. I have it connected via USB port to a hub since my Macbook Pro doesn't have any regular USB ports. No direct connection is possible.

Please try right-clicking the HP Firmware Updater icon and select Open instead of double-clicking it and check if it then launches successfully
