Hi @JWare36,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Connection Type: Ensure that your printer is properly connected to your laptop, either via USB or network (Wi-Fi/Ethernet). For scanning, a stable connection is needed.

Install Updated Drivers:

  • Ensure you have installed the latest drivers for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720. You can download the latest drivers from the HP Support website.
  • Verify that the scanning software or drivers are installed correctly for your ThinkPad's operating system.

Use HP Scan Software:

  • HP offers software specifically for managing scanning tasks. Install the HP Scan software or use the HP Smart App, which may provide more reliable functionality for scanning with your model.

Check Scanner Settings:

  • Open the HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve scanning issues. This tool can automatically fix common problems and provide guidance.
  • Ensure settings within the scanning software are correctly configured (e.g., scanner selected, resolution, file type).

Firewall/Security Software:

  • Sometimes, security software or firewall settings can prevent scanner communication with your laptop. Temporarily disable these settings to see if scanning resumes.

Update Laptop Software:

  • Confirm that your ThinkPad laptop is fully updated, including any OS-specific updates, which can ensure compatibility with connected devices like printers/scanners.

Test Scan to Computer:

  • Attempt to initiate a scan directly from the printer's control panel: Navigate to "Scan" > "Scan to Computer" and check if it recognizes your laptop.
  • Ensure that the machine name shown is your ThinkPad, indicating a successful connection.

USB Troubleshooting:

  • If connected via USB, test different USB ports on your ThinkPad. Also, check if the USB cable is functioning by trying another one if possible.

I hope this helps.
