The answer depends on the software you are using to set / submit the job to the printer.

 

HP Smart application does not provide the means to always Preset the selection to the document feeder.

 

The Full Feature Software / full driver printer software includes a method to set / select a Preferred scan shortcut.

HP Scan, unless set to use the Flatbed, will use the ADF when a document is properly loaded and detected.
