@Rose274, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're trying to scan using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) at the top, right? (not the flatbed glass?)
When the ADF doesn't feed paper, it's usually because of one of these common causes:
- Dust, debris, or bits of paper stuck in the ADF
- Dirty or worn out ADF rollers
- ADF sensors blocked
- Incorrect paper loading
- Hardware fault (like a failed ADF pickup motor)
Here’s a Quick Step-by-Step You Can Try to Fix It:
Power Cycle
- Turn the printer off → unplug it from the wall → wait 1-2 minutes → plug it back in and restart.
(Sometimes the ADF needs a full reset.)
Check the ADF for Jams
- Open the ADF cover (usually there’s a small latch).
- Look inside carefully: any tiny scraps of paper? Dust?
- Remove anything you find. Even tiny scraps can block feeding.
Clean the ADF Rollers
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
- Wipe the rollers you can see (they’re usually gray or rubbery).
- Rotate them manually and clean the whole surface.
Make Sure the Paper Is Loaded Properly
- Neatly stack the papers (no bent corners, staples, or wrinkles).
- Load it into the ADF until you feel it firmly rest.
- Check if the printer detects that paper has been loaded (it sometimes makes a beep or shows a message).
Try a Test Scan or Copy from ADF
- On the printer, select Copy → Document Feeder → Start a copy.
(This checks if the ADF itself is working, without needing a computer.)
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
