What am I doing wrong?
Trying to set up Scan to Network Folder. The folder I wish to use uses this form
( \\server, the computer attached to the printer, \ folder name).
Several (actually a lot) of variations have been tried. The response is always the
same : The network folder path specified does not exist.

Have you shared the folder? You need to right click on the folder in Windows and then select sharing. You may also need to adjust permissions on the folder.
I am a volunteer, offering my knowledge to support fellow users, I do not work for HP nor speak for HP.

Thank you Repairatrooper,
Your advice worked. I was able to 'Scan to Network Folder' but
I am not relly sure what I did . . It is probably going to take an hour or so
of 'experimenting' to repeat and leqarn what I did.
This Officejet Color Flow X585 is some kind of a printer! It must have taken quite
a team of thinkers to make the software!!
Thank you for "holding a novices hand".
