The HP Smart App was (unfortunately) renovated and the result is a disaster. If I want direct access to print or scan a document I now need to go through slow and useless images and steps and constantly have to install the same printer again and again, because when it "sleeps" the computer requires to re-install it. Also, during this process ñone has to go through a list of my old and new HP devices from which I need to choose the current printer. In sum: what is needed is that the new HP Smart app gives direct access to the installed printer, wakes it up and show the options, such as print or scan etc. The previous version of HP Smart was much better in that respect.

By the time any of us saw the new HP App, the decisions were already made about its configuration and services.

I've included some how-to and what-if information about HP App later in this message.

-- What to do? --

Not sure what is best; there are perhaps ways to work around the limitations you've discovered.

One of the main choices you have -- and if not done:

Install the full driver printer software.

and / or

Install the HP Universal Scan software.

Consider:

Windows Scan for simple, straightforward scan jobs.

If you do not want / need the added information, Scroll down to Web Pack Installation

Check / Apply Windows Updates

  • Check / Install any pending Windows Updates
  • If any updates are applied in Windows Updates, Restart your computer and log in

Next,

Uninstall existing printer software

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
  • If your printer software includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.

When available ...

The Offline Use Only, Print and Scan Driver, or similarly named installation web packs can be used in either a network‑connected or USB‑connected environment.

The name of the installation file depends on the printer model and the type of packaging.

This method includes the printer software in the installation package; hence the much larger file size.

You need not answer questions about which driver or type of printer software to select and install.

Using USB?

Be sure to unplug the USB cable between the printer and the computer before loading the software.

Re-connect the USB cable when instructed to do so, generally near the end of the successful installation of the printer software.

Cannot use the HP App for any reason?

Windows Scan is an excellent standard alternative for PDF / Image scanning in Windows.

In Windows,

Open

Start

Search for Windows Scan

Open the Scan app

OR

Get the scan application from the Microsoft Store:

Windows Scan

Start_Windows_Scan_App_1Start_Windows_Scan_App_1

Windows_Scan_Options_4Windows_Scan_Options_4

Next,

Neither the older HP Smart application nor its replacement app, HP, are suitable for a USB-only setup.

Should it work at all, many of the features of the app will be missing or curtailed.

Thanks for all this information. But something went wrong and now I am in serious trouble and don't know how to resolve that (and ChatGPT so far unable to help): I deleted the old HP Smart so as to have a clean new version, but now HP Smart does not work any more, because I briefly (second) see the old version with its colors of the cartridges but it is immediately replaced by a Copy1 of HP Smart, and although the computer is connected to the printer, and I even can print a test page, this version of HP Smart says the printer is not available. I have no idea how to eliminate this Copy1, and start all over again.

You are welcome.

I might not understand what you are asking.

and

I doubt I can do better than your favorite AI -- I do not always depend on AI for answers but I am aware that the one you using is quite smart (pun not intended) if you ask it the right questions using the right terminology.

If you uninstalled the application named HP Smart, then -- yes, depending on where on the planet you are located, HP Smart is no longer available in the  Microsoft Store and cannot be reinstalled.

HP, the company, had a clever idea to name their new application HP.  The plain name seems to make little sense though there is certainly a case for simplicity AND it is more difficult for thieves and scammers to name their own fake applications with cute names meant to confuse customers.

If you have installed the application named HP, then as described in the video -- HP (the application)is essentially a wrapper that can support your HP computer plus any HP printers it detects or that you add with "Add printer".

Printers that are added to HP with Add Printer or printers that are detected by the application might indeed be called My Printer, Printer 1, Printer 2, and similar.   If the odd "My Printer / Printer #" naming convention is used, the printer's model name should still be listed under the "My Printer" title.

I do not know of any circumstance where a printer added to the HP application would be named / called Copy #.

HP (the application) does have a preference for a clear path to the printer(s) you want to add.

"Clear path" generally means your network should be reliable and -- if possible -- configured with a separate assigned IP address for each device on that network.

Example -- HP App - Windows - Menu / Options

Complete Steps 1 through 3 to open the app and select your printer

Next,

Step 4 -- Printer Menu

Scroll down in the Printer menu to the last entry

Step 11  →  Remove Printer

-----------------------------------------------

Where does "Copy 1" come from?

No idea.

Years ago, there was an odd patch to one of the old full driver scan programs that would install and name a "fixed" version of the scan software as "Copy 1 - Do not Delete" (or similar, it's been a minute since I've seen this).

The name of the patch and the "do not delete" used in the name did seem to confuse people -- the whole thing was dropped years ago.

If you have unwanted printers outside of the applications -- for example, printers listed in Settings or your Control Panel, these can be removed.

Settings_Installed_Apps_Programs_Features_HP_3Settings_Installed_Apps_Programs_Features_HP_3

Next...

If the following does not make sense -- Ignore it --

Printers that the HP application detects might not actually be usable in their current state.  That is, the printer might have been detected and added to the application but it is not actually fully available.  It might, for example, have connection issues (not fully on the network), the printer might have ink issues that are causing it to fail its self-checks -- the printer might be stuck in some kind of error state.  Problems of this type must be cleared before the printer can be fully added to HP (the application) and be used.  It's a sort of "half-way-there" situation.  The printer exists and HP can detect the printer -- but there is something wrong with the printer or its connection to the network that HP (the application) cannot decipher.

I am sorry I could not help.

@BeemerBiker

As a staunch fan of both printers and ChatGPT, can you help @teunavandijk ?

Thanks for any clarification and help!

Thanks for our kind reply. Finally, HP Works -- again -- as I wanted, by first uninstalling the one that did not function  and then install it again - interestingly,. and I don't know why, in the classical format of HP Smart and not the "renovated" format. So, all is well, and I would recommend you to tell HP people that the new HP Smart version is really no good, and that installing it "over" the old one may cause problems.
