I bought a new scanjet 3600f1 scanner, but I do not know how to scan to OCR. Is there more software that I need besides the HP Scan - Full Feature Software and Driver?

The only option I see is scan to PDF. 2025-01-31 22_41_32-HP Scan - HP ScanJet Pro 3600 f1.jpg

Hi B86549, I have the same scanner. So, yes OCR is integrated into the full driver and software package and HP manages to hide its advertized features pretty well. If you go to the support page for the HP Scanjet 3600 you will not find any documentation with regard to the accompanying software but it does exist elsewhere: the technical whitepaper on https://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=4AA7-5829ENW is quite extensive.

The short answer to your question is that you can adjust the Scan Shortcuts to your heart's content (or create duplicates, rename those and adjust the features slightly for different uses cases).

The image you pasted shows only half of the actual screen which looks like this:

In this screen you can change the file type (I think to .rtf and .docx, but my scanner doesn't work at all anymore on the latest Windows 11 - but that's another story). If you click 'More >' you get even more options. One of them is also PDF/A which is a kind of PDF that also includes text. I hope this helps a bit.

If I'm behind my Windows 10 device again I might be able to help a bit better.

I am not getting any options to save the document other than .pdf.I will also include what was installed from the full install. Screenshot 2025-02-02 215026.jpgScreenshot 2025-02-02 214649.jpg

You don't get other options even when you select 'Everyday Scan' instead of 'Save as pdf'?

I will get back to you when I'm behind my home PC again.

All I get are the following options, only 1 for PDF. I didn't see anything in the document about a PDF editor. Did your version have one?

Did you consult the manual/whitepaper I linked to?

The software does not come with a PDF editor, although I don't understand what use a PDF editor would be in this case. If you need one Microsoft Word can serve quite well to edit pdf files, as well as open source alternatives OpenOffice etc.

edit:

It seems you don't have installed the complete package. Did you install the 'HP Scan - Full Feature Software and Driver' (411 MB)? My shortcuts look like this (unfortunately in Dutch):

One of the options is 'Save as editable text (OCR)'. Also, if I look at 'Everyday Scan' I get many more file types I can choose from (including Word, Excel etc.):

So, I'd recommend to (re)install the Full Feature Software Driver, https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/SJ0001_PAY/COL117456/Full_Webpack-63.4.6169-SJ000...

I uninstalled everything and reinstalled after a restart. I guess there is a difference in the language packs, because I still don't get all those options.

I haven't played around with the office conversion yet. Seems like a bulky way around the issue.

It's more of a convenience when searching documents.

On a side note. Do you ever have an issue where the scanner is calibrating and it goes too far and sounds like it is slipping the teeth on the belt?

The installer is multi-language, though. Did you also install the  HP Scan OCR Add-on Software? I'm not sure whether this changes anything in the interface but if you haven't it might be worth a try.

I have not experienced the physical problem you mention, but I have not used the scanner that frequently yet.
