Try these steps:

Verify Connection:

  • Ensure that your HP LaserJet 1136 printer is properly connected to your computer via USB or network, depending on your setup.
  • Check the cable for any physical damage and try a different USB port if necessary.

Update or Reinstall Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support Website and search for your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest drivers and software package for the HP LaserJet 1136.
  • Make sure to include the TWAIN and WIA drivers that come with the package.

Set HP Printer as Default Scanner:

  • Go to “Devices and Printers” on your computer (accessible via Control Panel).
  • Right-click on the HP LaserJet 1136 printer icon and set it as the default scanner.

Check Scanner Settings:

  • Open any TWAIN-compliant software you are using (such as HP Scan software) and ensure that the HP LaserJet 1136 is selected as the default scanner device.

Restart HP Services:

  • Type "services.msc" in Windows Run dialog and press Enter.
  • Look for HP related services (such as HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service, HP Network Device Support, etc.), right-click on each service, and restart them.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from the HP Support Website.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to diagnose and fix any scanning issues.
