HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw

I am not receiving faxes. When a fax sender attempted to send a fax I did see that it was coming through on my HP screen, but no physical fax ever came.  I have plenty of paper.  I did reset the machine.  I tried the HP Fax test service on the support page, which showed that my fax had been received "OK" but nothing was returned to me. None of the instructions on the HP support page on "how to print a test report" or how to "check fax reception settings" pertained to what I see on my HP screen.

Hi @mgindi,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw is not receiving faxes, there could be several reasons behind the issue. Here's a troubleshooting guide to help you identify and resolve the problem.

Check Fax Connection:

  • Make sure the phone line is connected to the correct fax line port on the printer.
  • Verify that the phone line is active and capable of sending and receiving faxes.
  • Ensure that the phone line is not damaged or disconnected.

Check Fax Settings:

  • Press the "Setup" or "Menu" button on your printer's control panel.
  • Navigate to the fax settings menu and verify that the settings are configured correctly.
  • Check settings such as ring delay, automatic answer mode, and fax header information.

Test the Fax Line:

  • Try sending a fax to your printer from a different fax machine or an online fax service.
  • If the fax is received successfully, it indicates that the issue might be with the sender's equipment.

Check for Fax Errors:

  • Look for any error messages displayed on the printer's control panel or printed on received faxes.
  • Error messages can provide clues about what might be causing the issue.

Update Firmware:

  • Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer on the HP support website.
  • Updating the printer's firmware can sometimes resolve compatibility issues and improve functionality.

Clear Memory:

  • Sometimes, the printer's memory can become full, preventing it from receiving faxes.
  • Clear the fax memory by going to the fax settings menu and selecting the appropriate option.

Check Answering Machine or Voicemail:

  • If you have an answering machine or voicemail service on the same line, ensure that it is not interfering with fax reception.
  • Adjust the number of rings before the printer answers to avoid conflicts.

Check Distinctive Ring Pattern:

  • If your phone line has distinctive ring patterns (different numbers of rings for different purposes), ensure that the printer is set to recognize the correct pattern for fax reception.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
