HP 2874

Does anyone managed to get OCR to work on HP Scan for HP 2874?

According to https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_6106460-6349950-16 it "should" work.

I followed the steps in the link but I still didn't succeed. "Save as Editable text (OCR)" does not appear

Any help is welcome

Well, thanks for the accolades --  your comments make my day!

What?

Welcome to the HP Community --

I agree - regardless of the text in that document, it is not always the case that the OCR feature is added to the HP Universal Scan or the HP Scan (part of the full driver printer software).

No, I don't have an explanation.

I have a printer that includes the OCR option in HP Scan and another printer that does not.

The proposed solution works for the printer that lacks the OCR feature in HP Scan.

Will it work for you?

Might be worth a look...

If you have not done so, try the following:

Create OR Edit an HP Smart > Shortcut

While creating the Shortcut to Save the scanned content,

If the option is available, Select File Type = Searchable PDF

Reminder:

Shortcuts of this type must be saved into one of the supported Cloud Storage destinations.

Yes, you can drill down in the Cloud Storage folder to select a sub-folder location.

Destinations not listed in the app are not supported.

Example - HP Smart - Shortcuts - Edit (a previously created) Shortcut

After edits, Delete / Cancel / Save shortcut

Thanks mate but nope it is not there Searchable PDF

Funny enough OCR is present in the installed programs when you look at programs and features but it is kind of not linked to HP Scan.

Any other idea?

OK -- All the following is typed "on the fly" - not great - here we are...

Take from it what you will -- or ignore the lot.

OR

Go out and find, obtain, purchase OCR software and be done with all of it.

Start...

If your OCR is listed Programs and Features as OCR software,

Then

Your Operating System is some flavor of Windows that supports the full driver and the Universal Scan software

And

The listing Programs and Features is likely referring to the software linked to the HP Universal Scan and not the original HP Scan that is part of the full driver printer software.

No, I cannot explain why the HP Scan name ended up the same (although at least the shortcuts on the Desktop can still distinguish which app / software is which).  Perhaps the naming tangle is the result of a clever programmer joke... It's been interesting trying to explain the names and where / how they are used.  I'm not even sure at this point whether I'm even correct in my assessment of the situation.

Worse, the Printer Assistant has been removed from some full driver printer software packages -- this is fine, the Printer Assistant has no place in the new Full Driver software.  That said, it's a mess explaining the sudden change to those who have used HP products for a number of years and perhaps even used and liked the Printer Assistant.

Meh.

Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_12Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_12

Neither can I explain why -- presuming the OCR refers to HP Universal Scan / HP Scan named shortcut on the Desktop -- the software would not include the OCR line in in Shortcuts for OCR .

Note

I cannot untangle HP+ service (OfficeJet Pro 9135e) to test whether the following is true.

The "Guess" - What appears to be true...

HP+ has altered the software - OCR is no longer (was perhaps never??) part of the installed HP Universal Scan software for the new printer (OfficeJet Pro 9135e) .

HP+ has altered the software?? OCR is not part of the HP Scan software that is part of the Full Feature Software.

The HP Universal Software -- when pointing at the HP+ enabled HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e -- does not include the OCR shortcut.

AND

When I select the Envy 7855 (Settings gear on the top row), the OCR Settings is displayed as part of the list of Shortcuts.

HP_Universal_Scan_Menu_JPEG_Page-Size_3HP_Universal_Scan_Menu_JPEG_Page-Size_3

Conversely -- and perhaps partly because I've enabled HP+ ? -- HP Smart Shortcuts always include the various (extra) File types in the Shortcut edit / create dialog.

What does this mean for you??

Perhaps nothing and I cannot test for you -- my HP+ printer and Not-HP+ printer setup appears to be a migrated mixture of "there" and "not there" options.

OR

Maybe...

If you were to decide to enable HP+

Then...

With HP+ service enabled, somewhere / some place , in some way you could use the OCR software that is apparently somewhere / some place in this mess.

OR

Go out and find, obtain, purchase OCR software and be done with all of it.

Be Aware - Enabling  HP+ is a "big deal"

Assuming it is available on your new printer, READ everything on the website BEFORE engaging the service!!

HP+ does give supported printers access to Print Anywhere -- nice.  Similar to the old ePrint tech.
