@Megan-2021 wrote:Is there OCR software for HP 8130e? Thank you.
Yes - HP can provide Save as Editable Text -- there are "strings attached".
If you want HP to provide you with OCR / Save as Editable Text PDF, you can have that feature along with other premium print and scan features → You must enable the HP+ service contract.
------------ Important ------------
You need NOT sign up for HP+ to get OCR.
OCR is available online as a free service (as long as you trust they won't steal your information) or as a purchase from one of the suppliers (Adobe, for example).
If you wish to do that, you are done - no more reading.
----------------------------------------------------
Continuing...
HP+ is free in the sense that you need not purchase the contract.
There are no up-front costs to enable the HP+ service.
HP+ does come with requirements for both HP and you, the customer.
-- Important --
HP+ makes permanent changes to the way you use your printer.
HP+ service, once enabled, cannot be cancelled or removed.

Requirements for HP+ printers
This topic describes the requirements for HP+ printers.
Keep the printer connected to the Internet
HP+ printers are cloud-connected devices that must remain connected to the Internet in order to function. The
Internet connection enables the printer to deliver HP+ specific app features and firmware updates.
During setup, you must connect the printer to the Internet using a supported network connection. After setup,
you can print using a USB cable connection, if desired, but the printer must still be connected to the Internet.
Use Original HP cartridges
Original HP cartridges are cartridges manufactured and sold by HP in official HP packaging. If non-Original HP
supplies or refilled cartridges are installed, HP+ printers will not operate as expected.
Have an HP account
Create or sign into an HP account to manage your printer.

Information for HP+ service contract
and
The separate contract for Instant Ink subscription
HP+ refers to an optional contract for Service and Benefits available on select "e" Printers.
Signing up requires deliberate action on the part of the customer.
HP+ is an optional service contract that includes both benefits and responsibilities.
HP+ in a broader sense might appear - at least from a customer's perspective - to include HP Instant Ink.
HP Instant Ink is also a contract --
This time the contract is for a service: Print-by-Page Subscription to Instant Ink service plan
Instant Ink subscription requires acceptance of the service and a credit card to secure the plan.
When you sign up (enable) HP+, you might be offered a trial or contract for Instant Ink.
Instant Ink is a great service for those who can benefit from the service and who are willing to accept the constraints within the contract.
-- Important --
- The offer for Instant Ink can be declined / refused.
and
- Like HP+, Instant Ink changes the way you use your printer.
- Instant Ink can be cancelled -- there are "strings".
- Do not sign up for Instant Ink unless you understand AND want the service.

P.S. Dragon-Fur:
How can I know if I am already signed up for HP+? The initial installation in December 2025 was so confusing, I do not know if the HP tech installing this printer for me asked me if I wanted to sign up. I hope I am NOT signed up!
Thanks again!

You are welcome.
Signing up for HP+ requires your consent -- it might have been more obvious were you the one answering the setup questions during the printer's setup.
Regardless, there are easy ways to check --
For example,
Open HP Smart (Windows)
Open Printer Settings
Enter the PIN when asked -- Remember that the default PIN is included on the Printer label
User Guide - HP OfficeJet Pro 8120e - HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e Series
Inside the printer cartridge area as illustrated on Page 2, Item #6
Next,
When the Printer Settings menu opens,
Scroll down to Topic Settings
If you see the option for Print Anywhere,
then your printer is HP+ enabled.
Example of an HP+ enabled Printer
HP Smart - Main Menu > Printer Settings
Print Anywhere
HP_Smart_Win_HP+_Print_Anywhere_9
-- What if? --
Yes, there are those strings that were mentioned:
HP+ enabled printers
User Guide - HP OfficeJet Pro 8120e - HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e Series
Page 7
- Printer must use HP genuine ink, not refills with an embedded HP Chip. If you are willing to purchase HP ink cartridges, this is a "no big deal" feature.
- Printer must be connected to the Internet -- If your network is stable, connecting the printer to the Internet does provide access to features that are not otherwise available, even without HP+.
- You must have an HP Account - You already have one of these -- An HP Account is required to use HP Smart (Windows) and / or the HP App (Mobile).
-- Dragon Opinion --
The HP+ premium features are nice -- there are several, in fact.
One of these is Print Anywhere -- the replacement for ePrint.
True -- Print Anywhere is tied to HP Smart / HP App and is not "stand alone".
On the positive side, Print Anywhere is actually supported and is more secure.
None of my comments are meant to sway your opinion.
They are just Dragon observations.
I want you to have what you want.

Many thanks once again Dragon-Fur for your kind, prompt and helpful reply. This is what you wrote:

I did not see "Print Anywhere" but do have "Print from other devices" under "Manage Printers." It requires getting software so maybe that is the equivalent of the "Print Anywhere" option??? I hope this means I am NOT HP+ enabled as I would have to give HP a failing grade for technical customer support.
Technical support does not call back when they say they will and they cannot fix what seems to me simple technical issues. One of the two tech specialists hung up on me when he got frustrated not being able to fix things. And trying to call them back does not work either. So, Dragon-Fur, I so appreciate your CORRECTLY answering my OCR question as two different HP techs and five hours of my valuable time later, they still could not correct the issue. They still have not called me back despite their having given me two different telephone appointments which they did not keep. I wish they knew how disappointed I am with their service. Thank you so much for being there for me/us!!

You are welcome.
Print Anywhere is unique and is part of the premium HP+ / select non-HP+ printer services.
Because your printer is an eligible HP+ printer, the only way to "switch on" Print Anywhere is to enable the HP+ service.
Said another way -- HP+ is not sneaky or hidden.
All good, then.
Happy Printing.
