Office Jet Pro 8020
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Purchased an Office Jet Pro 8020 and the Scanner has never worked properly.  It would not feed from the Automatic Document feeder.  Online with Tech support multiple times, they provided a fix which worked for about a week at a time.  Found help on this Board and would work intermittently, if I would Re-boot both the desk top and Printer.

Changed ISP and Router recently, now unable to scan using the document feeder and screen on the printer.

This has been a very poor piece of machinery.  Bought a New HP desk top because o previous one was getting old, thinking this may solve the problem, It didn't.

Help Please.

@78tiger, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Are you able to scan using the flatbed glass?

Perform the steps mentioned in this document - Automatic document feeder does not pick paper or feeds too many sheets

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your computer.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Try to scan or make a copy from the ADF and the glass to check the result.

Use the HP Smart app on the computer to scan.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I can only scan by going to the printer app and using the desk top  to activate the scan function.   The scan function does not work on the small screen on the printer.

The printer prints well, it copies well using the screen on the printer, either from the flat bed or the automatic document feeder.  In terms of the suggestions above, I have downloaded them multiple times, they run a "check" and say everything is working well.  I have also run the Print/Scan Doctor from HP, which also is worthless .  I have tried un-installing and re-installing, all without success.

This was truly not a Plug and Play system.  Tech support by remoting to my computer was able to make it function for about a week, one time, and about 2 weeks another time.  I did obtain Help from this forum about 8-9 months ago, which required adding a line of code.

Both printer and computer are HP products, both less than one year old.

Do you have the full feature printer software installed on the computer?

Scanning from the printer screen requires this software.

Click here to download the HP Full-feature driver.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Open the HP Printer Assistant and go to Scan > Scan to computer > Enable.

Now, try scanning from the printer screen using the document feeder.

Let me know how it goes.

I have again uninstalled and reinstalled this printer/scanner and software.  NOTHING.  If I place a document on the glass and push scan on the printer, it will scan the glass.  The document feeder DOES NOT WORK  to scan.  I have used HP print Doctor, HP Printer App, which will scan one document from the feeder at a time.  Totally unacceptable.  I have gone to Microsoft and used their update to see if they have a better driver for the printer.  NOTHING.    I feel that I have spent a total of 40+ hours trying to get this to function properly with my time, and the time I have worked with Tech Support on line with remoting.  Nothing.  The HP print app Scan set up says that it is set up to scan from document feeder.  Doesn't work.  False reading.

What else to do?

Just reinstalling the printer software will not help. Did you go to HP Printer Assistant and enable scan to computer?

You may also go to the printer EWS page and check the scan settings.

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  • Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
  • Go to Scan and set the source as ADF if loaded.

Let me know how it goes.

Kumar,

Thanks for trying.  Unfortunately that didn't work either.  I was able to scan from the Automatic Document feeder, using my desktop as the initiating step.  It does not recognize the screen on the printer to initiate scan from the ADF to the Desk top.

Is this a common problem?  If not, why can it not be fixed on my printer, If it is a common problem, why has there not been a fix?
