HP Smart App does not recognize our Office Pro HP8710 during setup.  It shows online

When selected HP Smart says the 8710 must be turned on. It was on but we cycled power anyway.

Hi @Pat_Croach,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for sharing the screenshot. The error message you're seeing: "HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 must be turned on to add it to HP Smart. Once the printer is turned on, tap OK to refresh, and then select the printer again." indicates that the HP Smart app is not detecting the printer as fully online, even though it appears to be powered on.

1. Restart Everything

  • Power off your printer, computer/phone, and Wi-Fi router.
  • Wait 30 seconds, then turn them all back on (router first, then printer, then device).
  • Launch HP Smart again and try to add the printer.

2. Ensure the Printer Is Fully Awake

  • Make sure the screen on the printer is not dim or off—if it’s in sleep mode, press a button to wake it.
  • If the printer seems unresponsive, unplug it, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back in.

3. Reconnect the Printer to Wi-Fi

  • On the printer screen:
    • Go to Setup > Network Setup > Wireless Settings > Wireless Setup Wizard
    • Follow the steps to reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.
  • Once connected, confirm that the Wi-Fi icon on the printer shows a full signal.

4. Reset HP Smart

  • On your computer or mobile device:
    • Remove the printer from HP Smart.
    • Close the app and reopen it.
    • Tap “+” or “Add Printer” to search again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
