OfficeJet 8600 Plus
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have successfully used the Scan to Network function of my OfficeJet 8600Plus for many years. It is set up to scan documents to a QNAP TS-412 NAS. However, I haven't used it for a month or so (I've been on holiday) but now it's stopped working. Everything starts OK, but I then get the message  "Cannot connect to \\ALBERT-NAS1\Public\Brians-scans. Check that the computer is turned on." It is turned on of course. I can connect to the \Public\Brians-scans from the Windows PC I am typing this at. If I log into the Printer and try to examine the scan to network settings I eventually get the message

"This site can’t provide a secure connection 192.168.101.25 uses an unsupported protocol.
ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH
Unsupported protocol
The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite."

192.168.101.25 is the IP address of the OfficeJet.

All suggestions gratefully received, I've been going doolally for the last couple of days

@Brian_Bucket

If you have not done so, add the following to your checkpoints.

Recheck the Profile in EWS

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Scan > Scan to Network Folder > Network Folder Setup

What else?

  • Try changing the NAS connection to the NAS IP address.
  • Check that you can open the shared NAS folder in Windows using File Explorer.
  • You can try disconnecting the NAS from the computer and then reconnecting it.
  • If you disconnect / reconnect the NAS, Re-Check that you can open the NAS folder using your File Explorer path.
  • If it's been awhile, make sure your NAS firmware is updated.
  • Make sure your Shared folder (in the NAS) is still in group Everyone (log into the NAS to check).

General Example - EWS - Scan to Network Folder

Dragon-Fur Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I've tried to take the actions you suggested but I keep running into the same issue. From my PC I can connect to the printer's EWS and can use a lot of the options. However, if I try to select menu option SCAN ->Scan to Network Folder->»Network Folder Setup. A window opens telling me that I am going to be redirected to a secure (HTTPS enabled) page. That's where the problems start. I accept that and then get a message:

This site can’t provide a secure connection

192.168.101.25 uses an unsupported protocol.
ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH
Unsupported protocol
The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite.

and there it stops. I've done all I can with the NAS, I can connect to the subdirectory from my PC.

Could the fact that my printer is getting old (like me!) and is no longer supported be relevant?

@Brian_Bucket

You are welcome.

We are all getting older -- some of are just ahead of the rest of the pack.

Smiling.

True, too, the printer is likely nearing it's life-of-service boundary.

Note >> When you replace this gem, if you want all the same features, expect to pay a lot and look (only at) the top of the line OfficeJet Pro series (9000 series at this writing).  Yes, I know.  The model differences are both obvious and subtle.

Search the Internet:

"ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH"

(with quotes)

One of the better articles I found on the subject is this one:

How to Fix “ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH” Error

Lots to read -- it might be as simple as using a different browser, though there are also other suggested fixes.
