HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer

My scanner has suddenly stopped working. I can feed docs into it and it appears to scan but when it comes time to display the scan, I get "Scan Canceled" and "Scanning was canceled from the scanner." I've tried the Scan Dr and I've uninstalled/reinstalled the software without success. Any ideas?

Hi @Gemini_Jimmi

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with an issue where the HP OfficeJet 8740 scanner is failing to complete scans, and you're getting the error message "Scanning was canceled from the scanner." This issue can arise from several factors, such as software conflicts, incorrect settings, or even issues with the printer's firmware.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help resolve this issue:

1. Check the USB or Network Connection (for Network/USB Scanning):

  • If you're using the scanner via USB, make sure the USB cable is securely connected. Try a different USB port on your computer to rule out any port issues.
  • If you're scanning wirelessly, ensure the printer is still connected to the correct Wi-Fi network. You can check this via the printer’s network settings.

2. Restart Printer and Computer:

  • Power off the printer, wait for 10-20 seconds, and turn it back on.
  • Restart your computer to refresh the connection between your device and the printer.

3. Check the Scan Settings:

  • Make sure you’re using the correct scan mode and settings (e.g., resolution, file format, destination).
  • Sometimes, the scan settings might be incompatible with the document type or the selected destination folder, causing the scan to be canceled.

4. Update or Reinstall the Printer and Scanner Drivers:

  • Go to the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your HP OfficeJet 8740.
  • If you're using HP Smart or HP Easy Start, ensure that the software is up to date.
  • After downloading and installing the latest drivers, restart your computer and try scanning again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
