OfficeJet Pro 8710
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I scan photo the quality of the scan is not completely good. In the analysis, I note that the scanned image has been given too much sharpness. It creates a lot of noise in the picture. In the scanning software HP Scan can exposure be adjusted, not sharpness. The result is the same from all different scanning program I have tried. I have compared to my old scanner, HP ScanJet 6200 and it gives less noise in the picture and is less sharpened.

Is there any possibility to adjust the sharpening of a scanned image on the OfficeJet Pro 8710?

Hey there! @boka_lje, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have scan quality issues on your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?

Have you tried scanning from a different application?

Have you installed full feature printer software on your PC?

Try the steps recommended below.

Change the scan settings with HP Printer Assistant.

1. Load the item on the scanner glass, in the document feeder slot, or in the automatic document feeder (ADF), depending on your printer type and features.

   note:

Do not load photos in the ADF to prevent damage to the photos and the printer.

2. Search Windows for your printer model, then click the printer name in the list of results.

HP Printer Assistant opens.

3. Click Scan, then click Scan a Document or Photo.

HP Scan opens.

4. Click one of the shortcuts that matches the file type and resulting action you want.

5. Change any of the shortcut default settings on the right side of the window, if necessary.

   note:

Available settings change depending on if you are scanning a document or photo. For example, the PDF File type is only available for document scans.

6.Select Show scan preview or Show Viewer After Scan to preview and make additional edits to the scan before saving it.

7.Click Advanced Settings or More to change settings such as quality, color, and default scan destination folder.

8.Click Scan.

The printer scans the item, then a preview of the scan displays in HP Scan.

9.If necessary, double-click the thumbnail image of the scanned item, then change any additional settings.

10.Click Save.

The Save as windows opens.

11.Select the folder you want to save the scan to, change the File name if necessary, confirm the file type in the Save as type menu, then click Save.

Clean the automatic document feeder (ADF) rollers

If your printer has an automatic document feeder (ADF), dust or paper residue on the rollers or separator pad inside the ADF can result in scan quality issues. Open the ADF, then clean the ADF rollers and separator pad.

   NOTE:

The location of the ADF rollers might be different depending on your printer, but the following steps still apply.

  1. Gather the following materials:

    • A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that does not come apart or leave fibers

    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the printer)

  2. Remove the original document from the ADF.

  3. Turn off the printer.

  4. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  5. Open the ADF cover.

  6. Find the paper pick rollers and the separator pad inside the ADF.

Figure : Example of the paper pick rollers and separator pad in a LaserJet printer

The paper pick rollers and separator pad

Figure : Example of the paper pick rollers and separator pad in a OfficeJet printer

  7. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with filtered or distilled water, then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

  8. Use the damp cloth to wipe any residue off the paper pick rollers and the separator pad.

  9. Leave the ADF cover open for two minutes to allow the paper pick rollers and separator pad to dry.

  10. Close the ADF cover.

  11. Reload the original document print side up in the document feeder tray. Gently slide the document into the printer as far as it can go.

  12. Slide in the paper width guides until they are snug against the paper.

Do not push the paper width guides in so far that they bend the paper.

  13. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  14. Turn on the printer, then try to scan.

If the issue still persists update the printer firmware and check if it helps.

Well, my problem is a bit different. The scanner scan images nicely and everything works as expected. Except for one thing, the scanned images are sharpened to hard. And that result is more noise in the image and “harder” edges of objects in the photo. This is noticeable when photos are scanned, not for documents or graphics.

So for scanning photos is the sharpening level resulting in lower quality of the scanned image.

I have tried different scanning programs, have latest firmware in the printer/scanner etc. The reference is my old scanner, HP ScanJet 6200, which produce much better photo scanning.

So, my question is, if it is possible to adjust the sharpening level of the scanned image for HP OfficeJet Pro 8710?

@boka_lje, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

Try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.

Select scan on the printer control panel

Scroll and select resolution from the list.

Select the maximum DPI from the list. Select 600DPI.

And select quality to high

If you still have issues try restoring the scan settings to default.

Go to set up on the printer control panel.

Select printer maintenance from the list

Select restore and select scan from the list.

Hope this helps!

Take Care! 🙂

I have tried different settings for the scanner and started the scanner from different scanning programs and from the control panel of the scanner. The image is saved both compressed (jpeg) and uncompressed (TIF). The scanner has been reset, the driver is reinstalled and the device have the latest firmware.

The result is the same, the scanned image (from old B/W photos) have more noise and “harder” edges of objects in the photo compared to my old scanner HP ScanJet 6200. For everyday scanning it’s no problem, but for higher quality scanning (i.e. B/W photos) then it’s a big problem. ScanJet 6200 produce much higher quality of a scanned B/W photos and images with contrast rich content.

My comparison shows that the scanned image has been sharpened too much. The contrast around the edges are strongly increased and that create a strong halo (= noise) around the edges in the image. The end result will be a scanned image that looks sharp but has lower quality with a lot of halo effects (= noise). The noise in the scanned image appear most at higher DPI (600 and 1200) and that is a consequence when an image is sharpened too much.

I would like to know if there is any possibility to adjust the sharpening level of the scanned image. The best solution would be to have a setting where the user can choose to deselect the sharpening and take care of that in post processing.

Thank you for all your answers.

But, sorry to say it, it´s no solution for my question about the scanning quality of HP OfficeJet 8710. None of the tested scanning programs (HP Scan, HP Smart, HP Scan and Capture, MS Scan, MS Twain) have settings for the scanners processing quality. I’m aware of that.

The problem is that it seems like scanned images (i.e. B/W photos) are sharpened and noise reduced too much in the OJ 8710 scanner. The contrast around the edges are strongly increased and that creates a strong halo (= noise) around the edges in the image and a lot of lost details. The end result will be a scanned image that looks sharp but has lower quality. The included picture shows example of the difference between the two scanners (300% zoom).Comparison OfficeJet 8710 and ScanJet 6200, scanning B/W photoComparison OfficeJet 8710 and ScanJet 6200, scanning B/W photo

HP OfficeJet 8710 produce a scanned image that has low quality for photo scanning. Post processing cannot save that. HP ScanJet 6200 produce a soft scanned image, but with post processing the result will be a high quality image.

If it is not possible to adjust the quality of the scanner's processing of the image then the scanner is not useful for creating scanned photos of good quality.

A good solution would be to have settings where the user can choose to deselect the sharpening and noise reduction in the scanner and take care of that in post processing, when scanning photos.

@boka_lje, Thanks for your prompt response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned you still have issues with the scan quality.

HP Scanjet's are dedicated only for scanning purposes. So you cannot compare an inkjet printer with a Scanjet printer.

Also, Scanjet's have a better scan quality and it uses dedicated software for scanning.

However, you can change the exposure settings in the printer software on your Officejet printer and check if it helps.

Open HP printer assistant select scan, select scan a document. And follow the steps from the image attached below for more information.

Hope this helps!

I think you are right.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is an AiO device and ScanJet 6200 is a dedicated scanner. The ScanJet 6200 (14 years old) has definitely better scan quality and that is not depending on the software, as I use the same software for both scanners when I am comparing. The quality of the scanned image from OJP 8710 is the same from all the different scanning software I have (HP Smart, HP Scan, MS Scan and VueScan).

It seems that HP has applied a too strong and poor sharpening of the image in the scanner before it is sent to the computer software. That way o lot of information in the scanned image are destroyed. A good solution would be to have settings where the user can choose to deselect the sharpening and noise reduction in the scanner and take care of that in post processing, when scanning photos.

My conclusion is that OJP8710 is excellent for everyday simple scanning but should not be used for photo scanning.
