Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My Officejet Pro 8725 connects to my Dell laptop (running WIndows 7-64 bit) via USB. There is never an issue with the printer, however, everytime I unplug to USB to travel for work, and return, the printer works fine, but the scan no longer works - the only way to get it back is to uninstall and reinstall the printer completely. I travel every week so this is not an acceptable solution. I don't have any issues with anything else working correctly when plugged into any of the USB ports on the PC - and I have tried the printer USB in all of them.

My previous printer did the same thing - it was an HP Envy 7645, however the scan would never work even if I reinstalled the printer software.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

Have you tried connecting WIreless to your printer?  That would save you the convenience of plugging in the USB cable each time after your travel.

You can start by connecting your printer to the network:

HP Officejet Pro 8720 series :Wireless: Setup Wizard

1. After connecting, go to your HP Printer Assistant.

2. Under Toools> Select Device Setup & Software.

HP Printer Assistant Tools.jpg

3. Connect a new device

Follow the steps to setup your printer wirelessly. YOur new printer will be HP Officejet Pro 8725 (Network)

Let us know if that helps in your issue.

I will try that again. I thought I had tried setting it up wireless, but it never found the 'scanner'. Will let you know if that solution works. Thanks.

I ended up having to uninstall and reinstall, then set it up as a wireless connection, and the scan option returned. So far so good. Thanks again for the assistance. I may try hooking up my HP Envy again and see if it works as a wireless connection as well.

So I got it set up as a wireless connection, printed documents fine, went to scan and it said the scanner was not connected. The signal strength for the wireless is strong. So I turned the printer off, and back on, and it worked.....until I scanned a document, then it lost the connection again. So I turned the printer off and back on, and it worked. This is the same wireless network my computer and phone are connected to and i never have issues with them. I'm not having issues with the printer itself not printing - the scan function is the only problem. There has to be a solution to this issue other than turning printer on and off everytime i need to scan something.

Hi,

Can you try using a TCP/IP port?

Create a TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right click the printer and left click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video example will show you how to do it:

Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port under the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

Let us know if that works

I finally got the issue resolved by uninstalling/reinstalling, then updating the firmware. I found a different post about this same issue, and everyone was indicating the firmware had to be updated. There was a new firmware version, WMP1CN1606AR, that was released Dec. 16, 2016. I did this update two days ago, and have not had any issues with the printer/scanner losing network connectivity. Thanks for your suggestions as well.
