OfficeJet 8740 all-in-one

I have an OfficeJet 8740 connected to my router via ethernet. I have two MacBook Pros (an M1 and a M2). Both are running Sonoma 14.3 and the office jet has the latest firmware.

One of the Macs (M2) has never had the HP utilities on it and can print and scan without issue.

The other Mac (m1) has previously had the HP utilities on it, can print, but has NOT been able to scan for a couple of months. Even when the HP utilities were installed. Any attempt to access the scanner (either via HP software or Image Capture) and it throws up an error "Scanner reported an error" - "An error occurred while communicating with the scanner".

I've seen people reporting that this is a firmware issue, but I don't understand how it can be if one Mac is fine and the other not. In fact the only difference I can see is that the Mac that cannot access the scanner has had the HP scanning and utilities software installed, then removed in an attempt to see if it was the problem.

I've also removed the OfficeJet from the Mac's printing system and re-added it back in.

Anyone got any ideas?
