HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

On OS Sonoma 14.5 - Scanner feeder function no longer works although feeder does work for printing and also able to scan 1 page at at time using HP smart and flatbed.   Have tried to download and reinstall current drivers for Officejet Pro 6978 multiple times, but nothing seems to work. Very frustrating!

Hi @gbahi,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Dealing with scanner feeder issues can be frustrating, especially when other functions of the device are working fine. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem.

Check for Software Updates

  • macOS Updates: Ensure your Mac is running the latest version of macOS Sonoma 14.5. Sometimes, updates include fixes for hardware compatibility issues.
  • HP Software Updates: Check for updates to the HP Smart app or any other HP software you are using.

Reset the Printer

  • Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Reset the Printer: Some HP printers have a reset function. Check your printer manual for instructions on performing a factory reset.

Check Feeder Hardware

  • Inspect the Feeder: Make sure there is no paper jam or debris in the feeder. Clean the rollers using a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with water.
  • Test the Feeder: Try feeding a single sheet of paper through the feeder to see if it pulls the paper correctly.

HP Scan Software

  • HP Easy Scan: If you're not already using it, download and install the HP Easy Scan app from the Mac App Store. This app can sometimes provide better functionality and compatibility than the generic macOS scanning tools.
  • HP Print and Scan Doctor: Although primarily for Windows, this tool can sometimes help diagnose issues when run on a Windows machine connected to the same network as your printer.

Reinstall Drivers

  • Uninstall Old Drivers: Completely remove the existing HP drivers and software from your Mac.
    • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    • Select your printer and click the - button to remove it.
    • Delete any remaining HP software from the Applications folder.
  • Install Latest Drivers: Download the latest drivers and software for your printer from the HP website. Follow the installation instructions carefully.

Check Scan Settings

  • Scan Preferences: Open HP Easy Scan or HP Smart, go to the scan settings, and ensure that the feeder is selected as the source.
  • Adjust Settings: Try different scan settings to see if the feeder starts working. Sometimes selecting different resolutions or color modes can make a difference.

Test with Another Computer

  • If possible, try connecting your printer to another computer (preferably a Windows PC) and see if the feeder works there. This can help determine if the issue is specific to your Mac or the printer itself.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and possibly resolve the issue with the scanner feeder on your HP Officejet Pro 6978.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
