Printer:Officejet Pro 8610
Connection: USB
O/S: Windows 10 64-bit
The printer works fine when printing documents, pictures, etc.
I launch the HP app and select scan - error message "The HP Officejet Pro 8610 was not found".
I launch the windows scan - error message "No scanners were detected"
I downloaded HP Doctor software and it hangs at communicating with printer at about 98% done.
I have completely removed and installed all HP software numerous time.
Running out of hair - any and all assistance is appreciated.

Hi,
this is beautiful, it makes the scanner work and there is no hardware problem.
The HP software must be completely uninstalled and removed of the system.
First download only this complete package: "HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer series / HP OfficeJet 8600 Series Printer Full Feature So...".
Then proceed as follows:
Check the system for
- TuneUp`s
- Optimization Tools
- Cleanup Tools
disable them, better uninstall them. Next...
- Disconnect printer/scanner from computer- Disable WLAN and/or remove the USB or LAN cable.- Do not switch off the printer >> unplug the power cord from the socket!
- uninstall all HP software > via "Programs and Features"
see here., and remove the printer from the devices list, if present. - Restart the PC
- Change File-Explorer-Settings:View > Options > "Change folder and search options" > Tab "View"
- enable > Show hidden files, folders and drives
- uncheck > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- search for "HP [printer name]"and delete all this folders
- Empty the TEMP folders
A) C:\Users\[Your user account]\AppData\Local\Temp\
B) C:\Windows\Temp\ system files cannot be deleted! - Reconnect the printer to the power supply and switch it on (if this does not happen automatically)
- Please note: WLAN has to be deactivated!
- Restart the PC
- Close all programs
- Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo > in folder Downloads click on the EXE,
File name: OJ8610_198.exe (162.1 MB).
Via USB, means wait until the installation asks to connect the printer/scanner. Document error messages, even better is a screenshot and upload here. The network configuration or the type of connection can be changed later.
Note:
Change the File Explorer settings again -
- enable > Don`t show hidden files, folders or drives
- click button > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- OK
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Does copying work? Use the control panel to start copying.
Is the scanner lamp turned on and is the scanner unit moved?
Keep me posted.

Yes,
your printer has "wireless direct" but no WiFi.
Read here: HP Wireless Printers - Printing with HP Wireless Direct
And here: Printing from Android Smartphones or Tablets
More Information about wireless and networking see here:
- How to
- Wireless, Networking & Internet
- Wireless Connection & Networking
You need not change the USB connection to wireless at your PC. USB and wireless can use together.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
