When I try to copy or scan a document I get a message :  "Original Misfeed  --- Make sure your document is placed all the way into the automatic document feeder, then restart the copy job."       Even if I place a document on the plate to copy without using the automatic document feeder, I get that message, and I cannot copy or scan.  We have checked to make sure there is no paper jam, and there is none.

@Shafter

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have an HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer. I read that when you try to make a copy or scan a document, an error appears saying  "Original Misfeed  --- Make sure your document is placed all the way into the automatic document feeder, then restart the copy job."  I read that this error appears while using the document feeder and also while using the scanner glass bed. Not worry, I'll do my best to help you.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Did any hardware changes take place on the printer recently (like a carriage jam, was the printer moved, etc.)?

Meanwhile, I did some research and suggest you to perform the following steps to fix the issue:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector.
  • Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

Please try to make a copy using the document feeder or the glass bed and check the results. If the printer continues to display the error then I suggest you to reset the printer.

NOTE: Resetting the printer will take the printer to its original factory condition. If the printer is connected to the network then it will get disconnected and you will need to reconfigure it again.

I have sent you a private message with the steps to reset the printer.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know what happens. Good luck! 🙂

Hey there! @radioralph, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you are getting original misfeed error when you try copying from your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Have you tried checking on a different brand paper?

As you mentioned you are getting original misfeed error when you try copying from your printer.

Try the steps recommended below.

Clear any jammed paper from the ADF cover rollers
Press the Power button () to turn off the printer.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Open the ADF cover.
Carefully remove any jammed paper and bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the ADF cover. Use both hands to pull whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.
NOTE:Thoroughly check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the cover, more jams are likely to occur.
Close the ADF cover.

Reset the all-in-one
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot original jam errors with your printer.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps. It is a hardware issue with your printer.

MrRobot..Thank you for your response and I have followed your suggestions but I am still having the issue previously listed. I have never used the auto document feeder to make copies...thus  no issues with paper jams..etc , I always placed the item to be copied direct on the glass .The Scan function works well and the printer has been trouble free other than the current issue and has printed less than 4,600 pages.Thank you for your responses and help...I'm guessing one of the gears attached to the small electric motors in the ADF is out of position , or a switch is not in its normal operating position , thereby causing the error message.
