HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

After having worked for years, when I tried to scan/copy on my printer this morning, I got a message saying 'turn printer on and off. If the problem is not fixed, the scanner component is broken and cannot copy or scan'!! The printer is connected wirelessly but has never shown this message before. I tried switching on and off and nothing, so left it off overnight, still nothing. There is no reason for this to have happened, no damage etc, so I would like to know why and can it be fixed. The rest of the printer functions are working fine, so I really don't want to have to ditch it and get a new one!

Hi @anyhelpers,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that your scanner on the Photosmart 7520 printer has stopped working. While it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause without more information, there are a few common reasons why a scanner may stop working suddenly.

  • Software or driver issues: Sometimes, problems with the scanner software or drivers can prevent it from functioning correctly. It's worth checking if there are any updates available for the printer's software or drivers and installing them.
  • Connection problems: Ensure that all cables connecting the scanner to your computer are securely connected. If you're using a wireless connection, check the Wi-Fi connection and ensure it's stable.
  • Power issues: Verify that the scanner has power and is turned on. If it's connected to a power strip or surge protector, try plugging it directly into a wall outlet to rule out any issues with the power source.
  • Paper jams or obstructions: Inspect the scanner bed for any paper jams, debris, or physical obstructions that may be preventing the scanning mechanism from functioning properly. Clear any such obstructions carefully.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks so much for the full and comprehensive reply to my scanner issue.

I have tried 95% of what you suggested in your reply already, but as the printer is working fine, I don't think it is a power/WiFi/paper jam issue.

Not entirely sure how I update the drivers, it's possible it could be that as it worked fine one day and the next, nothing! It seems a shame to get rid of the unit when the major part is still working OK.

Could you give me a 'steer' as to how to look for updates please?

Many thanks,

Sally
