Placing an original on scanner glass

The guides for placing an original on the glass are as thick as a finger. There is no indication of the exact best placement of an original on the glass for scanning. An illustration would be most helpful. Thank you

Thank you for this reply. It is very helpful. Yet I find that when I place the original in the corner, a section of the top and of  the right side tend to get cropped off. Thanks again.
