Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended

When I open HP Scan, recently installed on my new computer I get 2 pop-up windows saying that

1) there is a newer version of HP Scan available for download

2) there is a newer version of Firmware available for download

In both cases I have what is shown as the newer version. They show that I have an older version, which is not true.

The windows look very much like they are from HP (too baa there is no place to attach a screen shot to this posting).

Are these legitimate or fraud ?

I have not fallen for them.

Thanks a lot.

Any idea of how to get rid of them - stop them from popping up ?

Hi @BernieVG,

I understand you’re receiving pop-up windows claiming that newer versions of HP Scan and firmware are available, even though your system already has the latest versions. Let’s go through some steps to verify and stop these pop-ups.

a. Verify Software Authenticity

HP updates only appear through the HP Smart app, HP Support Assistant, or Windows Update.

If the pop-up does not come directly from one of these sources, it’s likely not legitimate.

Check the address bar or message origin — genuine HP prompts never ask for external downloads or redirects to unknown websites.

b. Check Installed Versions

Open HP Support Assistant → My Devices → Updates and confirm both HP Scan and your printer firmware are already up to date.

If they are, dismiss any other prompts outside of Support Assistant or HP Smart.

c. Disable Background Update Prompts

Open HP Support Assistant → Settings → Notifications.

Turn off options related to “Product updates” or “Firmware notifications” temporarily to prevent repeated alerts.

d. Remove Potential Duplicate or Fake Apps

Open Control Panel → Programs and Features and check for duplicate or suspiciously named HP Scan versions.

Uninstall any that aren’t digitally signed by HP Inc.

e. Clear HP Temporary Files

Press Windows + R, type %programdata%, and delete the HP and HP Support Framework cache folders (only cache, not system files).

Restart your computer and relaunch HP Scan.

f. Reinstall from Trusted Source

Download the latest HP Scan or HP Smart software from the official HP website (support.hp.com) under your printer’s driver page.

This ensures all old or corrupted update modules are replaced.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your most thorough reply. It was helpful. I am convinced that they are fake. I think I know how I got them, but I can't get rid of them, I just have to "X" them out every time I open HP Scan. Afraid to even click "cancel". When I first got these windows, I clicked to download, and t screwed up HP Scan & I had to re-download and install it from HP.
