HP ENVY 5020 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I scan, no matter what setting (output type, resolution, etc.), my HP ENVY 5020 All-in-One Printer cuts some of the image off - it does not scan all the way to the top left but instead removes about 2mm from the top and the same from the left. I have tried to stop this by expanding the cropped area in the 'HP ENVY 5000 series-HP Scan' application but it's not cropping it there - it seems to be happening in the physical scanning process.

Can anyone suggest a solution to stop this happening in the future?

(I am not very happy about this, I scanned a bunch of important documents and photos and no longer have access to them, and they are all missing part of the image!)

If you believe the result is coming from the scan process,

If you have not done so,

Check / Correct the Page Size / Scan Area setting in the software / application you are using to scan the content.

HP Scan - Page Size

Set the Page Size = Entire Scan Area

HP Smart - Windows - Scan > Scan Documents > Preset = Documents

Set the Scan Area = Entire Scan Area

==============================================================

The limitation of the Page Size / Scan Area setting is the maximum size of the scan area supported by the printer.

For example,

Product Specifications for the HP ENVY 5020 All-in-One Printer (M2U91B)

Section Scan

Maximum flatbed scan size (metric)
216 x 297 mm
Maximum flatbed scan size (U.S. standard)
8.5 x 11.69 in

True -- "After the fact" is not a substitute for having access to the documents so they can be re-scanned.

There is not a way to "uncut" missing data -- it is like trying to saw a board longer than its length.

General Example - HP Scan - Main Menu

9025_HP_Scan_Menu_PDF_More_All_39025_HP_Scan_Menu_PDF_More_All_3

HP Smart - Windows - Scan > Preset Document - Menu Settings

Dear Dragon-Fur,

That certainly was extremely helpful. Changing it to Entire Scan Area has reduced the amount it is cropping. Now it's more like 1mm off the top and about the same on the left. However it is not a complete solution (though I am still very grateful).

I would add that it's weird that changing the scan size adjusts the top left of the scan. That corner is meant to be the edge of the scan, and you are meant to put your documents etc. right up to the top left of the scanning space (the near right in actual physical reality) to square it up and take full advantage of the expected scan space, so one would expect any change in scan size to happen down the bottom right of the document - right?

PS yes, I know I can't restore the already cropped data... that's why I was upset!

Thanks again... hope someone can help with that last 1mm

Hi,

Please make sure you place the original correctly near the bottom-right corner with the page header facing to the mark, where the paper sign mark is shown nearby the flatbed glass corner, from your description it seems as you misplaced it in a wrong corner:

 Hi ShlomiL ,

Thanks for clarifying. I was and am indeed placing it in the correct place (as demonstrated in your video).

What I was trying to convey was that the item to be scanned is in the top left of the page (as determined by where it is in the scanned result eg the jpg), and those are the corners being lost. However as you physically look at the printer in front of you, it is in the near right corner; this is shown in your video.

The settings might be responding to a limitation in the printer hardware.

What?  It's possible that just because the paper fits on the printer flatbed that the printer cannot actually "see" every bit of the paper / content.

As a check -

HP Scan -

Open More > Section Scan

Check the settings.

For example,

Open the sub-menu and check the Output Page Size settings

"As Input" should be OK -- you can also try to adjust the actual size "Scan Area".

The limitation comes from the printer hardware -- refer back to the specifications for your printer.

Example - HP Scan > PDF > More > Scan > Output Page Size

9025_HP_Scan_Menu_PDF_More_Scan_Output_19025_HP_Scan_Menu_PDF_More_Scan_Output_1

What else?

Not sure -- this printer lacks an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).

Printers that include this feature can generally scan a larger sheet size using the ADF.
