Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP Smart won't load. Updated. Had HP remote and fix.  Worked once. My computer was Windows 7, upgraded to 8 and 10.  I think there is confusion in MS or in HP that has part of my printer looking for Windows 7 and part looking for Windows 10.  HP got the HP Smart to open.  I could finally scan (which is what I need to do).  I scanned 2 documents and then it wouldn't work.  Does anyone know how I can scan something from my printer to my computer (and find it later in the computer) and circumvent the HP Smart?

Hi @kickersmom2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're having trouble with HP Smart and need to scan documents from your printer to your computer without using HP Smart, you can use the built-in scanning features available on your HP printer. Here's a general guide on how to do it.

Locate the Scan Button on Your Printer:

  • Most HP printers have a physical button labeled "Scan" or "Scan to Computer" on the control panel.

Place Document on the Scanner:

  • Lift the scanner lid and place the document or photo face-down on the scanner glass.

Use the Printer's Control Panel:

  • Press the "Scan" or "Scan to Computer" button on the printer's control panel.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts on the printer's display to select scan options such as color, resolution, and file type.

Initiate the Scan:

  • Once you've configured the scan settings, press the "Start" or "Scan" button on the printer. The printer will scan the document and send it to your computer.

Check the Computer:

  • The scanned document is typically saved in the default scanning destination on your computer. This could be the "Scanned Documents" folder or another location depending on your printer and computer settings.

Use Windows Scan App:

  • If your printer is connected to your computer, you can also use the Windows Scan app. Open the Start menu, search for "Windows Scan," and open the app. Select your scanner, configure scan settings, and initiate the scan.

Check the HP Printer Software on Your Computer:

  • You may also have HP scanning software installed on your computer. Check your installed programs for any HP scanning software and use it to initiate scans.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
