Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Deskjet 1050 J410
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I attempted to scan a doc, I received the error message Printer Offline.  I unplugged and plugged the USB in multiple times.  The driver was up to date.  I ran the troubleshooter.  The only recommendation was that I make the printer the default printer.  Otherwise, it showed that everything checked out.  Same offline message.  I rebooted the computer.  Same offline message.  I uninstalled and reinstalled HP Smart.  Initially it said Printer Online.  Then it took me through a lengthy and very flawed setup.  It said I had to set up an account in order to scan.  I attempted to do that but was repeatedly taken through the verification stage where I had to select the picture that was right side up.  No error message.  Was just hung up in the vicious cycle.  Finally got through that.  Message now says Printer Status Unknown.  I ran the Print and Scan Doctor and updated the software as recommended.  Still says Printer Status Unknown.  I was able to successfully scan one doc; however, moving from one step to the next was extremely sluggish.  The second doc scanned upside down with the image inverted at the bottom of the page.  Again, each step was sluggish.  The message still says Printer Status Unknown.  The app seems to be malfunctioning.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

In that case please use the regular Printer software to scan. Please download and install the software from here:

Let me know if this helps.

Thank you. The only thing it gives me the option to download is the Bing Bar.

The issues I was having were occurring before I updated the software a few days ago.

Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:
