I'll add that I feel it's a power saving issue - if I print something, then scan, no issues. I can also sometimes get it to not crash by attempting to scan to a PC from the printer itself (that never works, but it sometimes seems to wake the machine up).


First of all, I was able to reproduce this problem consistently on the first scan or copy of the day even after successfully printing, so your issue might be different from mine.

 

I was contacted directly by HP Customer Support. First they had me perform a "semi-full reset" of the printer, which involved a weird series of undocumented steps with the buttons on the printer's control panel. That did not fix the problem, so they offered to exchange the printer (since it's still under warranty). I'm now on Day 2 with the replacement printer and have not seen the problem yet.

 

I have noticed that the new printer takes an extra long time to perform the first scan of the day and while doing so makes sounds that the old printer never did. This makes me believe that there's a series of wake-up operations for the scanner hardware that were failing with the old printer.

I have had this problem ever since I got my printer 2 years ago. At least you can be sure it's not a Windows problem as I use an MacBook.  It's a real pain and makes me reluctant to start scanning - every time a reboot.
