Printer works fine when printing documents, just does not copy documents whether using the document handler or on  the glass.

Hi @Rod1149,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP ENVY 7640 printing normally but not copying from the document feeder or glass. Let’s go through a few checks.

Check Copy Settings

  • On the printer control panel, select Copy.
  • Verify Paper Size matches the paper loaded.
  • Confirm Color or Black copy is selected correctly.
  • Set Copy Quality to Normal.
  • Start a test copy.

Print an Internal Copy Test

  • Place a document on the scanner glass.
  • Close the scanner lid fully.
  • Select Copy > Black.
  • Wait for the page to print.
  • Confirm whether the page is blank or faded.

Check Scanner Lamp Operation

  • Open the scanner lid.
  • Start a copy job.
  • Observe whether the scanner light moves across the glass.
  • Confirm the light is bright and steady.
  • Close the lid and try again.

Run Printhead Cleaning

  • Open Setup > Printer Maintenance.
  • Select Clean Printhead.
  • Allow the process to complete.
  • Print the test page.
  • Try copying again.

Check Ink Cartridges

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove and reinstall both cartridges firmly.
  • Check for low or empty ink levels.
  • Replace any depleted cartridge.
  • Test copy again.
