I need help - I have templates that I need to print off on A5 paper. Which I have and have attempted to load but the printer says the paper size doesn’t match what is assigned. I use Adobe reading or word for the templates and adjust the options as needed on my laptop - so I hit sizing A5 and Landscape because that is the way I need the formatting to show. The issue is that even if it prints, the template doesn’t get printed. The printer just spits the blank paper out and says the paper doesn’t match the assigned sizing.

How do I access the paper sizing settings or whatever on the actual printer? I am using a work computer and since my boss is not always available to ask questions to, I have been stuck trying to figure this out all week long. I have the A5 paper, the template is sized to be printed on A5 paper.

If it is just a matter of adjusting the paper tray then how do I do that properly. Do I have the A5 paper in portrait (up and down) or landscape (left to right)? If the A5 paper is pre-hole punched then will that mess up the printing?

Welcome to the HP Community.

Answer:

Tell the printer about the paper you are using.

Scroll down to "What to do"

Guessing that this is your printer:

Printer Specifications for HP Officejet 6810, 6820, 6830 Printers

The following solution assumes you have installed the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software.

A5 paper is supported.

IF the paper does not show up in the paper list,

Create a Custom Paper Size form.

See User Guide

Page 25-26

and / or

HP Document:

HP Printers - Creating Custom Paper Sizes

Example

Custom_Paper_Size_Form_Examples_1Custom_Paper_Size_Form_Examples_1

=============================================================================

What to do?

Load the paper according to the instructions in the User Guide

Starting on Page 11

Alert the printer to the (new) paper in the printer tray.

(Page 13 - item 6)

Change / check the paper size on the printer display

and / or

Adjust the paper preferences using the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)

Click Apply to save changes

Example - Retain / Modify / Check the paper size / type

Retain_Printing_Preferences_5Retain_Printing_Preferences_5

In general,

Assuming the printer software is installed,

The printer is aware of the paper size / type setup,

Word can print the document using the options in the main print menu AND setting the correct Shortcut and options in Printer Properties.

What are Printer Properties?

When called from within a program / software, the Printing Preferences might be called Printer Properties / Properties / More Settings, or similar.

Printer Preferences provides access to the features available in your installed full driver printer software.

Example - Printer Preferences - "Everyday Printing"

9025_Printing_Preferences_Everyday_39025_Printing_Preferences_Everyday_3

What you change for the current job depends on selecting an appropriate Shortcut and then editing the entries in the various tabs to fit the job requirements.

Example - Word document - 3x5 inch card - mixed content

Word_Test_3X5_card_Portrait_2Word_Test_3X5_card_Portrait_2

What if?

If Word is stubborn for any reason,

Export the document to PDF format.

Open the file in Adobe Reader DC

Click the printer icon

Adjust the settings in the main menu

Click Properties to edit / adjust the rest of the settings

Click OK to save the changes in Properties and return to the main print menu

When ready, click Print

Example - PDF print - Main Print menu

Manage Print Output with Print Preview_PDF_1HManage Print Output with Print Preview_PDF_1H

What else?

HP Smart Windows can print your PDF file.
