I have been gradually scanning old family photos, placing 6 or 8 at a time on the screen. There used to be an option to scan "multiple images", which I could then separate before I saved them. All of the sudden, today, it is not giving me the option to do it this way - that choice does not show up! My only option is to scan one at a time, which would take me 6 times as long per session. I have reset the scanner and my laptop, but that didn't help.

Which Scan application or Software are you using?
HP Scan -- part of the full driver printer software -- can scan more than one photo placed on the glass / flatbed, separate each image into a separate file and then save each of the files onto your computer.
HP Universal Scan -- available for your printer and your Windows version as a "stand alone" installation -- is essentially the same scan software as HP Scan. HP Universal Scan also includes the same options / features.
Option -
Page Size = Detect Photos
IMPORTANT
If you have the full driver printer software installed (including HP Scan) - then you need not also install HP Universal Scan. If you cannot stand not having it, the system generally tolerates having both HP Scan (part of the full driver software) and HP Universal Scan software installed at the same time. It might become confusing but it's certainly possible to have it all.

HP Universal Scan Software installs a new, full featured, (and separate) HP Scan software shortcut to the Desktop. Note:
Where supported, HPUSS can be installed as standalone or installed after the full feature / full solution printer software.
HP Universal Scan Software might add OCR libraries to installed HP Scan software.
Open website HP Universal Scan Full Feature Software
If needful, choose a different OS > Open all
Find / Download / Save / Install HP Universal Scan – Full Feature Software and Driver Webpack
